Just to play devil's advocate, Southwest requires everyone to buy a 737 type prior to employment, and I believe they're the highest paid 73 drivers out there...Gulfstream also requires payment for employment, and they are the highest paid 1900 drivers....

wow, didn't know the Colgan crash was GIA pilot, CA I presume?
There is something to be said for pilots who never learn how to fly an airplane properly. I learned more about flying while I was instructing than I did my first year at a 121 airline, teaching is the best way to learn IMO.

I disagree with Turboprop's contention that Gulfstream offers "internships" as I view those as pay-to-work arrangements. Having said that, God forbid if something was ever to happen to him/her or any other Gulfstream-trained pilot I'd never dare to discuss his/her qualifications, errors, etc. I'd leave that to the NTSB. I'm sure he/she would do the same for me...

I think we all should focus on discussing the pitfalls of pay-to-work outfits, including the cleverly designed so called "internships." We should not speculate what might or might not have happened in different airline accidents because frankly that's what NTSB is for... Besides, since those crews aren't here to defend themselves it's a dishonorable thing to do; we are all pilots no matter how we got there.

This has got to be by far one of the BEST threads I've ever read. I applaude everyone's professionalism in taking a stand in what they believe as far as the PFT debate.
I've gained greater insight into both sides now.

In case you missed it, I have received a paycheck for every hour I've flown (including the 250), since the first day of IOE. The only time I flew the 1900 without getting paid, was the day of my final check after the type checkride, before release to OE. But hey, thanks for playing...
