Well I just wanted to say I went to Marvin's service tonight - and it was wonderful. The family really appreciated everyone's support - and they were grateful for everyone's positivity. The Westboro Baptist Church (Westboro Baptist Church Home Page) was picketing, but no one paid attention to them which was fantastic. The people who spoke said so many nice things about Marvin - and many wonderful stories were told about him and the people he influenced during his time on this planet. I was very thankful to have the chance to listen to his daughter and son speak - and I was touched by their humility and respect for their father.
I also had the chance to speak to a few Colgan pilots. I was very happy to see such fine men standing alongside the table in the front of the church, and they were damn good examples of the pilots at Colgan - I have always respected those pilots, and even more so now. I didn't talk to all of them, as we did not want to intrude on their privacy being as we were from Mesa. Thank you all for setting such a wonderful and high example for the rest of your colleagues, at Colgan and other carriers. May God bless you - and may you perservere in every dream that you have.
You always have friends at Mesa, and you all are admired for the people you are.

The entire sect should be sent to Guantanamo in my opinion; plain thugs that's what they are.
Dublin, thanks for your recollection of the memorial service...

I agree 100%- they shouldnt be picketing ANY funeral, but they state their case for picketing soldiers funerals on their website-however, they dont really give any reason for picketing an aviation disaster, so thats why im curious. Was there a gay person on board? Or is airtravel a sin? If this happened at my funeral, somebodys gettin a good ol ass whippin....

Well, these people are kooks - and everyone knows that too. Things went exactly as they should have gone during Marvin's service - and people just walked right by and ignored them and nothing was said about it. These people were on a corner so you HAD to drive right past them to get in to park.
Their purpose for these picketings, to make a long story short (and not to hijack the thread - but people just want to know), is to try to get America to realize that these bad things happen because we tolerate gay people. Apparently God..... 1 - let 9/11 happen, 2 - lets our soldiers get killed, and 3 - "casts planes down" .... because America is tolerant of gays. Marvin wasn't gay, and I don't know if anyone on board was or not, and it doesn't matter for their intents and purposes. I don't really know what they want America to do short of just killing all the gay people (and I am, so I don't want that to happen! haha). They are outrageous, but like I said - people just ignored them, and we all just remembered why we were there. A news lady came up to me and asked if I'd giver her my reaction to the picketing. I told her "Look, these people just want a reaction out of you guys. Writing a news article will give them just that. If you want to help, don't write anything about them. We are here to remember Marvin, so why don't you write something about him instead?" The next day, I didn't see any news articles mentioning those kooks at all from any of the Tampa news outlets.
I ran into these people here once before at Coretta Scott Kings funeral in Atlanta. I printed up their picket announcement flyer, like 350 copies, and went to all the thugged out, blackest areas of Atlanta and started handing them out to everyone - telling them what these people were going to do. I was hopeful I'd get some big black guys to come over and give them a good old Atlanta ghetto butt whoopin!!! haha - it was priceless. Unfortunately there were too many police surrounding them - no one could get into beat them up.
Edit: I hope I didn't cross any lines with the religious inputs - but it's kind of hard to explain these people without making reference to God a few times. Lets NOT make this about them though - and lets just keep the ball rolling on our comrads at Colgan and the families of the victims. I just wanted to explain these people since so many people wanted to know why. Again - lets NOT make this thread about the WBC.

This is indeed sad, but unfortunately in America, everyone (even the mentally ill) are allowed to voice their beliefs no matter how absurd so long as it's done peacefully.
Taste, class, respect and consideration are sadly also concepts that have fallen by the wayside as the years have gone by and the unfortunate hijacking of personal tragedies by mental fruitcakes who've appointed their disturbed beliefs as the foundation of what they demand YOU adopt will continue.
Most of all these people desperatly crave publicity. All we can do is deny them as much of that as possible. Disregard them and look the other way.

I do think the news in Tampa did well with that. No articles were written that I saw, and the families and friends just trucked right on past them.
Any more recent news that's been said? I have been out of touch for the past couple of days.
