Red face "Pickup" Question with Possible Displacements/Furloughs

This has nothing to do with open time - because it is already known on my end that open time pick up is considered "no bueno" with furloughs or displacements. However - what is the general forum consensus about picking up of reserve days with displacements and furloughs?

I think this is an honest question, and I hope we don't get any arguments out of this thread.

IMHO it doesn't hurt anyone but the person sitting on reserve. Especially when you're not getting more than 10 hours a month of trips - why not get the extra pay from the company to sit on your butt and listen for your phone. I don't think that it can hurt the guys on furlough? I could be wrong though....

** Again, if you think I'm a 'tard, just be reasonable with your response, I'm just asking a question, and I'm an industry n00b.

Pickup Reserve Day == (in crewtrac) PRD;
Meaning to a crewmember and scheduling, a guy/gal sits at home one or more extra days with phone in "on" position. Waiting.... for nothing essentially.

Default Same thing

If you are picking up reserve, that is one less person needed to sit reserve.

There is also the principle.

Heh well I won't pick up reserve but a little BG here - we already have way too many people sitting reserve and that's about to be added to. 36+ on reserve per seat and each reserve person gets <15 hours a month of flying.

What do you mean by "pickup" on reserve? You mean volunteer for a trip that is likely to be assigned to a reserve anyway?

No we can't do that anyways.

Pickup Reserve - ie Pickup Reserve Day (so one drops below min days off) and gets paid an extra reserve day.

I hardly got called when I sat 20 days reserve. About once every 6 days or so.

Heck, we've got 21 people per day sitting reserve. That's more than the number of airplanes we have.

Why would scheduling award an extra reserve day to someone in that case? My vote would be no I wouldn't pick it up even if I could.

Well scheduling is..... scheduling.

Anyways I've already got the answer to the question. "Working" extra reserve days is analogous to picking up open time. Thanks. All I needed. Peace out.

If there is an abundant of reserves, I'm not sure if Crew Scheduling would even allow it?? Back in my days there, that was a definite "denied: reserve level adequate"

Also, if this drops you below minimum days off, then consider the big picture effect Next time contract negotiations take place, bargaining for more minimum days off my be harder to come by when this type of practice is used.

Just something to consider

As far as reserve level staffing.... we're not adequate until we have a replacement for a replacement for a replacement. LOL

In fact it goes so far as that scheduling assigns people airport reserve a week out even though they're not supposed to give someone airport reserve until they've exhausted THAT days airport reserves.

Our reserve stats for Feb are:

Considering 15 airplanes to staff.

An average of 22 pilots per seat per day.
A high of 30 reserves/seat (on a Monday)
A low of 15 reserves/seat (occurs twice, on a Saturday early in the month, and a Sunday later)

Weekends are our leanest staffing.

At least I'm getting paid to sit on my butt and do nothing (except post on APC!).
