Regional Airline Pilots, what are you worth?
#51
I agree with you 100%, unfortunately you're always going to have guys that actually think they're better because of where they went to school.

Nobody has said they were better than anybody except you. You IMPLIED (incorrectly) that I thought I was better than you. A diamond will shine no matter where it's polished? Why can't it be polished at a 4-year aviation school? BTW, when did you get your degree and ratings?

Was trying to go with how much you're worth, not how much we cost....although, that could be the same argument from a management standpoint.
To add to what's been said, degree cost 30k, flying cost 30k, aviation program, state university, 172's and duchesses, had some bigger planes, but i never considered that "training". Also, good guy/girl ratio
PS, i am offended though, as i am a VW fan...however, i'm a BMW fan also, just can't afford one on FO salary.

I was in the 60k range at an out of state aviation university. Ratings thru CFI and did a "charter" course and internship with a major. I received a lot of scholarships and grants, so my out of pocket was around 45k. Finished everything in 2002.
I like some VWs too, sorry to offend you. Don't talk about my Mazdas!

I like those numbers, at the very least they are realistic and i think they would be a good starting point at the negotiating table.

As Pilots we aren't worth much, the current market shows that, but if anyone was wondering what kind of cash can be made, I made $53,000.00 in 2008 here at Expressjet, (2nd year pay) I could have made more but I don't pick stuff up unless its advertised, due to our guys/gals out on the street since late summer. Sad thing is, I am still pretty much broke due to still paying off school/flying loans.
I did work over my vacation, and living in base makes all the difference in the world, however I make only $100.00 or so per month with per diem

53 gran 2nd year to fly a little 50 seat rj. Thats crazy!!! You should ask your company to get bigger jets and take a pay cut while your at it. You could fly the 170 or the "Q"...Just playin. Its nice to see that express jet pays there FO's. Thats probably more that a colgan captian on the dash makes!

How about this... somebody make a website to honor the folks that are making an about face in this career. Show the guts it takes to say no to crappy wages and make them look like heroes. Give guys and gals true alternatives to the regionals other than teaching (for a crappy wage as well). Make flying look "not cool" and we'll have a true pilot shortage. If wages don't increase, we're fools for taking the jobs.
I don't have the answer, but it's obvious what the problem is: too much supply and not enough demand. It's time to thin the herd one way or another... because if you think even $30,000 is a fair wage for any seat in a 121 cockpit, you should introduce yourself to other lines of work.
