No commuter clause /w Hurricane
I am supposed to fly out to work tomorrow evening, but due to Hurricane Fay, it looks as though there is a distinct possibility that flights won't be leaving. I am going to try to leave earlier in the day, but if all the flights are canceled, I am screwed. With no commuter clause, my only protection is to call in sick. This will be my 4th sick call in almost 15 months of employment. Is that excessive?

who do you work for? 4 sick calls inside of 2 years is quite a bit.....but then again if your airline doesnt have a commuter clause then...what can they expect???

Its so silly. Because I've been here stressing out the last 2 days off I've had about this. I am already going to try to leave early such that I kill another day off, and I get to sit in a crash pad for over 24 hours before my trip starts. But if they cancel even those flights, I call in, and it makes me look bad. I am trying to be responsible in the face of something I cannot control. I love commuting!!

Since you asked..... You are scheduled to be at work tomorrow, you know the weather is crap, you have known it was going to be crap, Fay has been right on its forcast track of most of a week.... you make no mention of trying to get out today.... 4 sick calls in "almost 15 months", DUDE... at my airline, you'd already be gone, unless you had a real "medical" problem, which is quite easy to verify. At just 15 months at the company, that probably translates to just about 12 months on the line, 4 sick calls means about 1 every 3 months. What are you gonna do if you actually get "sick."
Not showing up for work at most places will get you a trip to the "Principal's office," as it should. Why don't you let us know if you get the paddle, or the "boot" during your visit.

If your worried leave earlier. Most commuter policies include a statement that you have to consider the weather. If you commute to NYC and they have a major snowstorm forcast that means you have to go the day prior. Commutter clauses are not a blanket get out of jail free card regardless of circumstances.

bryris,
While normally I would say that 4 sick calls in 15 months of employment is excessive, I also happen to work where you work and know that that is pretty light considering some of the people I know that work for good ole Uncle H. Granted, they are more for unforecast miscommutes than "scheduled miscommutes". Not trying to break your balls here, but if it worries you that much, get out of town and head to the Lou early. Try to pick up or trade a trip that starts earlier.
I know how much it sucks as I have been aroung for about a year and a half, but I also make the proper arrangements and as much as it sucks, if I gotta head out the day before to make sure that I get there, then that is what I have to do. I think the flack you are catching is because you are sitting there freaking out about it but not really doing anything about it. Again, not trying to bust your nuts, just sayin. Good luck with the commute, I head up there in the morning, maybe I'll see ya there.

Bryris,
Sounds like you'll either you have to bite the bullet and fly out earlier than normal if you think tomorrow's flights are going to cancel OR call the company and talk to your CP explaining that you need these days to secure your house, take care of your family, prepare for the storm etc. (if applicable) and let them code it the way they want to (but don't excpect to be paid for these days either). So what it comes down to is you being proactive and either flying out early (now) or making the arrangements to stay home. It's your choice!

You're also correct that commuting sucks. Good luck with yours.

I don't think 4 sick calls is bad, I try to average 4-5 per year. I just don't get sick on holidays. I agree with everyone else that you should have left the day before. I use to do that when I commuted and the wx was questionable.

I am probably going to leave tonight. 2 days early. I'll leave my wife and house to weather the storm while I sit in my crash pad. You gotta do what you have to do.
Also, for the record, I have 3 sick calls in 15 months. THIS would be the 4th and I am trying to avoid it.
