The 7 airplanes at the end of the year is definitely a negotiations ploy to try and dangle a carrot in front of us, so we concede. There's no reason why we as a pilot group should be willing to give in to such tactics. Any pay reductions wouldn't come near to paying the leases for that airplanes. If the company wants to keep the airplanes they'll do it whether or not we take concessions. If there was any time to be a united pilot group, this is it.
It would be great if the union were to get the company to develop an early retirement package that will entice senior captains to retire. I don't have a whole lot of hope management will be willing to put enough into such a package, but it could be a positive way to reduce the number of pilots instead of doing so destructively.
And I'd like to highlight the sentence toward the end of the ALPA Code-A-Phone message yesterday that said to make sure your permanent bid is up to date. That seemed like an interesting addition, and I thought it stuck out as something important.
Fly safely, responsibly, and be a good union pilot.

What's the new occurence policy like at PDT? Is it similar to PSA's? (At PSA, they devised the "Dependability Program." Basically, if you accumulate more than 6 occurences in a rolling one year window, you're fired. That includes absenses due to illness (i.e. sick calls), no shows, etc. Just have to hope you don't get sick too often, or if you're sickly, better hope you qualify for FMLA (FMLA absences don't count toward the 6 occurences).
Just wondering if management at PDT is taking a page out of PSA's play book.

I have attached a letter that our President, Steve Farrow, released to us on Wednesday evening. It concerns a reduction in our fleet plan for this year due to expired leases on four aircraft. This was not anticipated, and most here were surprised. I wanted to make sure that I sent it to each of you as I know it will affect your future plans. I don't like being the bearer of bad news, but wanted to be up front and honest with you.

This company continues to amaze me. While a good deal and decent pay scale they continually slap us in the face with stuff like these aircraft reductions. Their Machiavellian techniques of employee motivation are despicable and counter-intuitive to any "how to manage a company" handbook. We hate them and they hate us, what a beautiful environment to foster a successful airline......drink count-8.
