Here are some interesting numbers for you Piedmonsters:

By August of 2013 all F/O's will be required to have an ATP and unrestricted type rating in their aircraft. Hence the memo from both the Association and PJ that mentions beginning in as early as June ATP/Type rides will be given for F/O's...But wait..the devil is always in the details - According to a reliable source in the training dept that process will be as such:

You will do you regular CQ then an addition day of a 4 hour sim for training, then on day 4 you will do your 4 hour type ride. Without getting into the completely unfair nature of that as it has been proposed let's now look at those numbers -

There are 8,760 hours in 1 year. There are around (according to a loose estimate by the training department) nearly 200 pilots at PDT that need the type ride. Now, a regular CQ is 4 hours for MV, and 3 scheduled for LOFT for a total of 7 hours. Every pilot (currently showing 411), obviously over the next year will require 7 hours each for CQ..That is 2,877 hours. 200 or so F/O's will need an additional 8 hours for training and type ride..that is another 1,600 hours of sim time. We are now at 4,477 hours. Let's just estimate 20 more new hires and 20 more upgrades at 40 hours each paired up..that's another 800 hours bringing us up to 5,277 hours. According to the latest from training the sim will not be replaced but completely overhauled instead and it will be down for 45 days in the fall. That is a loss of 1,080 hours. Bringing the total available sim time over the year in question down to 7,680 hours. With the overhaul the sim will have to run 16 hours per day to get all this done and that is with only 20 newhire/upgrade sessions (probably a conservative number), no re-quals and no-retrains factored in.

The training department has only 5 people that can give type rides...

It's gonna be an interesting year.

You have WAY to much time on your hands. I'm sure new hires and maybe upgrades will be outsourced to flight safety in Toronto/Seattle/Atlanta. That's where I went for sim training as a new hire

I think it's interesting it takes about 2 months to complete upgrade training, however FOs will be given 2 days to get their type.

Yep, you guys are getting screwed. I could not have imagined doing my type ride after only two days of prep. It was a challenge enough after the full upgrade course. I've brought this up with our LEC, I suggest you do the same. Your ATP/Type ride is too important toward your career to risk on so little sim prep.

You already do a type ride in CQ every year. In upgrade training you get put through the ringer, but possibly not so much on a basic type ride.

U can do an ATP in a C172. An ATP ride is basically an instrument check ride. This isn't an upgrade check ride where your the captain to-be. Atleast that is my understanding

I thought the new rule was requiring a ATP only. I didn't know it required an actual PIC type rating as well.

Doing your ATP in a C172 is useless as you will have only ATP single engine. Now, you can do it in any light twin which will get you multiengine ATP.

Just a little semantics for you as a type rating is a type rating. It's not really a PIC type rating..it's an unrestricted type rating which is what Captains have. You have a type rating already in the Dash, it is however "restricted" to SIC privileges only. And yes, the new rule requires even F/O's to have an unrestricted type rating.

Even if you did this you would still have to take the type ride. And that would run you about 8K to do it on your own.
