So did anyone else notice that the new permenant bid goes into effect 9 days before the start of its effective date? Talk about not having alot of time to find a crashpad? Good luck to those being recalled!
Oh, and nothing good in Ask Piedmont this week. Just our flying is shifting more to PHL than CLT and EWR finally got a PLD.

The spoilers come up when the flight/taxi switch is at flight, power levers are at flight idle and 3 weight on wheels.
During the taxi out to the runway, the flight taxi switch is moved to flight, so all three conditions are met. When the power is brought up for takeoff they go down.
If you forget to move the switch before takeoff, it will magnetically release itself to the flight mode when the power is brought up.

When we line up on the runway we put the thing in 'flight' mode it detects weight on wheels with no power added so they deploy. As soon as we apply power for takeoff they retract. If we remove the power for a RTO or Landing they will deploy again.
We can't deploy them during flight to slow down like you can either, but man if we could the rate of descent we could pull off with a 100 would be insane.

Spoilers
Once the power is increased for takeoff, and the weight is off the wheels, these same roll spoilers will enter the flight mode, to assist the ailerons in banking the aircraft for a turn. In the ground mode, all four spoilers will deploy simultanously. But for roll control in a turn, only one inboard or outboard roll spoiler will deploy, located on the wing on the inside of the turn, depending on if the Air Data Computer is reporting airspeed above or below 140 kts, respectively.
The -100 series Dash also has four ground spoiler panels located at the top center of the wing root, above the fuselage. The ground spoilers operate with the flight/taxi switch to reduce landing ground roll, but do not have a flight mode to operate during turns. A full compliment of operating flight and ground spoilers, coupled with a landing approach at flaps 35, gave the -100 impressive STOL capabilities during the initial type certification. However, given the costs of maintaining the ground spoilers and runway lengths available at modern airports, the ground spoilers have been deactivated on a large segment of the Dash 8 -100 fleet.
