Plus, how would that help PDT anyway? It's not like we'd do CLT-SAT anytime soon.

Is Mesa's contract is up soon? While it doesn't necessarily mean they intend to cut ties with Mesa, companies - in any industry - typically don't put out RFPs unless there is work they need done, or will need done in some specific timeframe. Although, if Mesa is the cheapest, and still around, Airways will likely continue to use them.

As far as RFP's go, there's a surprising number of them that can be out at one time, even for 'safe' flying that is still under contract for a time. The Mesa CRJ 50 seat stuff that they used to do predominately out of IAD that just got replaced by ExpressJet and ASA has been bid on numerous occasions over the past few years.
While, obviously (normally?), the mainline carrier is looking for the 'low' bid, sometimes some odd RFP's are sent out that just give you the feeling that a carrier is fishing for a low bid as opposed to seriously considering doing the flying. If they can get something lowball enough, they'll take it, but it's not like they'll take the lowest of all the bids if it's not down at the level they want to make the flying viable.
As far as how certain other carriers picking up flying helps PDT, I know, this doesn't really answer your question, but think like this: The recent announcements of AirWis picking up PHLYHZ and CLTYOW, and PSA grabbing CLTBTR are, indeed, good for PDT. 3 new city pairs, and It's not really viable DH8 flying anyway due to the stage lengths, and more block hours for them will require refleeting of existing flights and somewhere in the schedule, PDT will gain additional flying.

Does anyone know the hours being flown on average per plane a day at PDT? Reason I am asking, PSA is less then 7 hours on average per day.... Obviously on weekends much less... Just curious where other companies are....
