OK so to get this straight...
1. Once you bid you can bid online by submitting the line numbers you want (not a real bidding system but just selecting the lines from the bid packet)?
2. Once you are awarded a line you then have 48 hours to trade what you want with open time (is this done automatically or is crew scheduling involved somehow)?
3. For trading does it have to be equal duty days (4 day for 4 day) or can you trade up/down (4 day for 2 day)?

2. It is done by crew planning by hand, but if the trade meets all contractual and Part 117 limitations it will be approved (assuming no senior pilot took the trip first.). Also, you may only adjust up to 6 days of work, so you can't drop every trip and pick up a completely different schedule.
3. Equal days.
Also, after the final awards are posted, you can make unlimited adjustments with the daily trip trades. These are subject to crew scheduling approval depending on coverage.

1. Yes. It is a web-based form with a bunch of text boxes labeled 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. You bid by ranking your lines from most to least preferred.

Right on cue here is Old Man to bash. Isn't it time for your pills? To answer, Its not likely but can be done. If I really really want a stretch of days off I will specifically bid those lines, then try a build-up line with my golden days requested for those days. Option 3 is to make a deal with crew scheduling for premium flying on other days off. Option 4 is go nuclear. I usually won't try to request a trade in the 48 hours for it. That is what they call "showing your hand." Rest assured I'll be off though.
