Right now trucking companies are paying for training and starting truckers out at 42K while in school. (I saw it on Nightline a few weeks ago.)

As pilots we have to invest a fortune, four years in college and have a lot of luck to make it to 42K.

Trucking isn't all that bad. Save your money on flight school and college and pay cash for a house.

If you really believe that Student's are making 42K then I got a bridge to sell you. Just like only 2% of pilots are at Nationals flying Airbusses or whatever only 2% of truck drivers are turning thier wheels 3000 miles a week, most average 1000 - 1500 multiplied by .28 cents a mile ( which would be very high stating pay at a training company for someone with NO OTR experience ) = $280 - 420 per week. Add to that an average meal costs $10 at a truckstop so if you only eat twice a day that is $140 a week out of your gross but wait you say that's 7 days a week! that's right back to the 2% rule ( but the recruiter said I'd be home every 10 -14 days!!! hahahahahahaaa ) sooo.... how is this possible! easy, once you start your work day you start your 14 hour clock you CANNOT stop the 14 hour clock. You can drive up to 11 hours within that 14. Now this is reality here - Dispatch sends you a load, you start your clock, you drive two hours to the get the load, you sit at the docks more than three hours to get loaded guess what? you're screwed. and even if it took only three hours you still got to stop and fuel and eat and pee....... but if you're 2% then you can drop, hook and roll PS - before a real driver sets me straight I know you can reset the 14 with 10 off, so there you go you can take a 10 hour nap in the middle of the day in the consignee's parking lot and drive all night.... wait.... I just slept all night... now I have to sleep all day? hahahhaahhaa

I actually did some research on this topic about a year ago when I was looking for a possible career change. Talked to some in the trucking industry and got the pros and cons. Cons outweigh the pros by far.

I saw a report once and it said that truckers work 70 hours a week so 70 times 50 =3500 hours a year compared to 40 hours at 2000 hours a year and they for the most part get no OT so they work 1500 hours more at the same wages and they do get 2 weeks vac .
Its sad they have to work long to even make a decent living .
Imagine if we had to work in these conditions !
NO THANKS .

You can teach monkeys to fly !

Just like in our industry driving for UPS would be nice. I used to throw boxes there in college, and those guys made good money had good benefits, and were very happy. The earning potential is higher in aviation for sure---while being a trucker might beat first year FO pay and probably second year FO pay, down the road flying an airplane will win that W-2 battle hands down (although I'm sure there are some exceptions).

On another note--if you really want to make yourself sick look at this.

Just under 10k/hr for 68 seat BBJ seems cheap? Those have to be old numbers... Global Express go for 8k/hr in charter hub with 13 seats?
