Denial
Maybe some have their heads in the sand because they do not want to see the truth? Sure, there is some good about an airline career, but it is being heavily overshadowed by the bad.

I have been reading these forums for quite a while now and just thought I would throw in my two cents worth. I hear so many people throw around the "I love what I do, I'd do it for free" or something along the lines of the Field of dreams quote from above. I think that right there hits the nail on the head as to why pilots keep seeing our profession and qol continue to be flushed down the toilet. Don't get me wrong...to do something you love and get paid for it...that's a great deal but it seems that a long time ago a line was crossed. People took notice of the passion pilots have for there jobs and used it against them. Benefits, salary, qol was cut knowing that these guys/girls love what they do, I've heard them say they would do it for free. We can really cut some things out, they aren't going to leave. That's the problem. It's gotten to the point where pursuing the dream of aviation has resulted in the loss of other dreams people have for there lives. Just for the sake of doing something they love. I know countless of pilots have families, cars, the good life etc but those goals and dreams increasingly get harder and harder to achieve in this industry. I never "loved" to fly. I always grew up wanting to do it and after college it seemed a good route to go. I look at it as a job and just like countless other jobs in the world it is a means to an end. With that in mind it is frustrating when everyone around you loves what they do so much that they keep giving up things no other buisness employee or group would do in their right minds just to "do what they love." Its gotten to the point where "doing what I love" starts impacting the ones that love you. What employee anywhere would stand for loosing half of their salary like the delta guys did. I get that people have to have a job and can't exactly just leave. I'm not saying that is the answer. The answer is changing the mindset of people that continue to just do this because they love it who cares what happens to my qol I get to fly. If that's how you feel please, find another job and fly on the weekends. You can get your fix then. Anyway that is just my two cents....take it for what its worth.

Medical, legal, and anything involved with the commercial aspect of alcohol.
Medical; sadly there are always people who are sick as well as on their way out. They will always need to be treated.
Legal, not really an "industry" per se; There are always people committing crimes. There will always be a need to defend/prosecute them.
Alcohol; Economy good, people will ALWAYS want to drink and celebrate. Economy bad, people are always depressed.

Legal=There are more people in law school now then there are actual lawyers. There will always be a need for a lawyer but with an over saturated market it's much hard to make a living.
Alcohol=Couldn't tell you. Maybe they make a good living maybe they don't.

Hell I know doctors who can barely keep their practice afloat.... no profession is immune from BS Sky.....
We have ALL aknowledged there are problems with this industry. Personally I would put up with some ( not all ) of the crap rather than deal with being a nurse. Its not all pie in the sky "helping" people.... its vomit, bed pans.... etc.... My MOM-in-law is a 26 year verteran of working in SICU's and she will tell you its not all pretty...... you WILL do stuff that is disgusting...
So.....lets just all agree to disagree about much of this.... there will always be people to do all of these jobs... and NO.. there is NO amount of money to make me clean somebodys vomit or crap when they cant hold it... NONE.

Im pretty happy, for the most part. Im finally off the rock and back home with no commute. I can hold a great 90 hour line (this month anyways...i like to work) 2 day trips, with weekends off. So needless to say QOL isn't too bad for me. I just wish pay was better. But who doesent

I am relatively happy. Yeah commuting stinks, but what are you gonna do. Either take another job close to home and be potentally unhappy or do what I enjoy doing. As ARL120384 said we all wish the pay could be better.

If you did not have a well employed spouse and had to support your family on what you bring in as a pilot then you most likely would not be flying right now. You and I are at an age when we need a real job and to make real money.
Anyone who throws away the dollars to become a pilot needs to make real money in order to justify the investment. At least a doctor can say that they are "just barely afloat" as you mentioned. Most Pilots are getting use to taking a loss.

How is it hanging whiz.......
Sky..... you are right.... I do have a WELL employed wife, and she supports my THIRD career ( 2nd time back in the biz ).... so yes things are different for me than many perhaps..... but I also gave up 10-12 years of seniority in this business to get where I am..... everything in life is a trade off my friend.
How is that 150.....?
