I was enlisted in the Army backin 1996-99. I was stationed at Schofield barracks, HI. I worked on my Private Pilots lisence at a local FBO in Honolulu. I did my fisrt cross country from HNL to Maui. It was very cool.

N6724G,
That is the ultimate student x-country. Bra, you make me want to go get checked out so I can do a little Island flying. I did a lot of reconnaissance flying in the Tomcat. Missions were couple hundred feet and 540-600 KTS Ground Speed , not a lot of site seeing going on at those speeds. When I got out, I went flying in Pensacola Aviations Super Cub and thought it was the coolest thing in the world that you could actually see stuff and open the window to boot. You've inspired me.... I'm going to get checked out. Did you ever fly to Dillingham on the North Shore? Tomcat

Having said that. here's the OTHERS..... gas this past week was $2.91/gal, the average home is more than $450,000 and that wouldn't even qualifiy as a fixer upper. Food is unbelievably expensive. It's a rock and nearly everything you consume has to be shipped in from somewhere in the world. You always pay a premium for the shipping. There is a little bit of reverse discrimination, not from the Islanders but mostly from the Japanese.
Here's my recommendation. You're accustomed to the starving student routine, so it's probably not much different. Shack up with your friends, as you probably will be helping them out as well. You won't hardly have any money to do anything and it will most likely wind up being one of the most memoriable times of you life. It's not about the destination, but the journey. Finally, EDDIE WOULD GO!!!!!!!!!!!

Ondemand,
From what I gather, it is survivable. Just make sure you have a roomie or even two. Cost of living is comparable to living out West. (CA, CO, WA) I am still concidering it, but now I am moving to FL in the Spring for a FI job. I think it will be a better move for me right now, so I can live for myself right now. Not to be selfish...but I am 21 and single...what do ya want?! If I ever get out there...maybe I will see you on the line? Take care bud.

block session
Tomcat,
yah, i got blocked also trying to send a message. Im up at the main campus; been there the entire time. Love the college life and the flying up here sees a lot more diverse weather. Do you have any idea how to get the privileges to message on this board? Anyhow, make it home about 2-3 times a year and usually go flying a couple times a year down there. Its always a treat as the weather is nice and the planes are real simple to fly. To answer the other fellahs question about living off of 20K in Hawaii? It can be done, but just remember that your gonna be able to afford nothing but the essentials and maybe a 24 hr. fitness membership and a surfboard. In my eyes thats all you need! You probably would need a roommate off of 20K as well just to cover rent and all....good luck!

Well Tomcat it appears we just need a ton of posts. Ah hell, [email protected] is the email....saves the hassle. On another note to the fellah looking at living in hawaii off of 20K, u might need to look at housing around Honolulu as that is generally the cheapest and keeps you relatively close to the airport! Good Hunting

I have a friend who flew for them, said the company was a bit unorganized. Also said they worked his a** off so he never got to enjoy the islands. He said his apartment was the size of a small hotel room and it was $800/month, his car got broken into several times. Now he flies for piedmont and hates life even more......Thats all I know.....oh yea it costs $1500 to ship your car over there....
