Default SkyWest Questions

For the SkyWest experts: i.e. JetJock16, etc.

Had the interview 2/29, got the hire letter there after!!!
Q#1 - How does seniority work @ SKW? Date of hire, gnd sch grad?
Q#2 - I'm in the CRJ pool - Read on this site poss June or Nov classes! - read on Air Inc the CRJ 7 & 9 delivery sched (19 coming by year end & 2009) - any update or ideas on CRJ class dates?
Q#3 - If I sit in the pool, do I stay there until I get the call for class? Unfortunately there's not a lot of info that flows down to us poolies. I tried to email Sharmane, but didn't get an answer - the future looks crappy right now - will stay with SKW till they call me with class date - I assume they will keep me on the new hire list even if the "f" word does occur. (I know they haven't "F"ed anyone ever) If things go south, would I have to re-interview, or am I "hired" as far as they are concerned.
Really excited to get on board - I love my current job, but no future. I'll wait here til SKW calls me for class. Thanks.

Right now SKW has a glut of extra pilots, and there are even rumors of furloughs being thrown around (doubtful but not impossible). The uncertainty of the Delta situation and the merger talks fuels the speculation. Bottom line we have had cutbacks in our Delta flying at a time when it normally increases, so coming online right now with the company is a little uncertain. We have deliveries coming, but what we really need is more opportunity for growth outside of the Delta market so that things can get a little more stable. There are all sorts of rumors about different opportunities to pick up more code share partners but don't count on anything until the airplanes are on the ramp with a shiny new paint job.

To answer the seniority questions it works by class date then your class is ranked by the last 4 of your social with 0's being the best 9 the worst.

Congratulations on getting the job... I guess.

Date of pilot hire (so your time as a ramper, etc, doesn't count). To split the tie amongst your class who all have the same hire date, the last four digits of your social security number, the lowest number being number one in the class. I believe Delta does it just the opposite... biggest number is number one amongst the class.

We actually ordered in November 2007, 18 of the -700's for United service, and 4 of the -900's for Delta service, with options for 15 more. They will more or less replace 23 EMB-120's used for United, and 4 CRJ-200's used for Delta, but transferred to Midwest service in MKE.

I think the whole training class date thing is so fluid now that nobody could give you an accurate date.

Sounds like you answered your own question. Good luck.

Call, email, send smoke signals, do what ever it takes to let them know you will take the EMB class, or what ever is offered first. You don't earn any more on the jet the first year. And if you want to upgrade on the Bro you won't be intimidated, like so many are, to toss your hat in the ring.

The sooner you start the sooner your place in line is held (read: seniority number!)

I heard they are offering unpaid time off to FAs...anyone heard whether they will do the same for pilots? Possibly instead of the "f word"?

My last FA told me about that. Heck, I'd take that and go down to Mexico. I don't think that they are going to furlough anyone in the pilot group because they don't want the stigma to hurt their ability to attract pilots in the future, but if things get worse and others start to do it SKW may follow suit. If they are willing to cut FA's loose for long periods of time then it means that they really don't have anything on the back burner that they expect to pan out soon right? I sure hope that things get a little more stable economically and we can get the price of oil down to reasonable levels soon or we are all going to get jacked. I read that Delta can cut our flying back past contract minimum flying, they just have to pay SKW the difference between operating cost and their contract rate, but the company doesn't have to keep pilots on board that they can't use.

Bus Driver; The advice about taking the EMB 120 is good. If I had it to do over again I would take the 120 because it is more stable than the jet, and you will get a line much sooner. If you are looking to fly out of MKE or ORD then the jet is obviously your only choice. Where are you trying to get to?

They only offered them to 25 F/As total from certain bases only for the month of april. It was because they planned on having more lines in certain bases than they actually will have so they don't want to force someone to sit reserve who wasn't planning on it.

As far as pilots go they are still running emb new-hire classes in april and may and jet classes starting up again this summer.

Heard from the guys in the training department this week that we are overstaffed by 150 pilots and that both United and Delta will be reducing the flight schedule even more.
