Ron Burgundy: Wow. Never ceases to amaze me. What cologne you gonna go with? London Gentleman, or wait. No, no, no. Hold on. Blackbeard's Delight.
Brian Fantana: No, she gets a special cologne... It's called Sex Panther by Odeon. It's illegal in nine countries... Yep, it's made with bits of real panther, so you know it's good.
Ron Burgundy: It's quite pungent.
Brian Fantana: Oh yeah.
Ron Burgundy: It's a formidable scent... It stings the nostrils. In a good way.
Brian Fantana: Yep.
Ron Burgundy: Brian, I'm gonna be honest with you, that smells like pure gasoline.
Brian Fantana: They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time. [cheesy grin]
Ron Burgundy: That doesn't make sense.
Brian Fantana: Well... Let's go see if we can make this little kitty purr.
[snarls]

Veronica Corningstone: My God, what is that smell? Oh.
Brian Fantana: That's the smell of desire my lady.
Veronica Corningstone: God no, it smells like, like a used diaper... filled with... Indian food. Oh, excuse me.
Brian Fantana: You know, desire smells like that to some people
Garth Holliday: What is that? Smells like a turd covered in burnt hair.
News Station Employee: Smells like Bigfoot's dick.

did anyone think that perhaps they didn't have enough students to fill up two separate classes?
I thought of it, but since they told the current BI class that this decision was a result of reduced flying from Delta due to fuel prices, I kind of figured it was due to reduced demand due to fuel prices.

I agree with the whole Chicken Little bit.... There are other reasons that new hire classes are being consolidated or set back. First and foremost being the training schedule. Initial training was designed for 8 sim sessions back when guys being hired had 2000 hours or so. Now that the 200-400 hour wonderkids are coming through, many are taking up to 12 sim sessions (sometimes more) in order to get signed off for a checkride. If 60% of a class of 20 do this (which is about the average), then that is 12 people, or 6 sim couples that add (6x4sessions) 24 extra sim sessions per class. Given that this has been going on for the past several classes means there's a heck of a back up in sim training. To compound this problem, sims breaking is also a usual delay. Run over on your alloted sim slots, and you could be looking at up to two weeks before they find another slot for you (according to a few people this has happened to). In other words, they're crazy backed up in the sims. The other thing is that hiring has said it has been "hit or miss" with finding guys to fill classes. No reason to run a class of 10 when you can wait a few weeks and have a class of 20-22. Price of oil is a marginal factor for hiring when we are still losing 40/mo due to attrition, but is the easiest and most simple excuse to give people when they ask about the slowing of hiring.

First of all, congratulations on your new job. However I would caution you not to put too much stock in what ASA tells you. The last regional for whom I flew told me, when I was hired, that they would be hiring 100/month for the the foreseeable future. They went on to say that those of us with ATP's would be junior manned to Captain shortly. They also boasted that they had never not been actively hiring since their inception over 25 years previous.

To make a long story short, soon after they quit hiring, considered furloughs, and I was stuck in the right seat for another 5+ years.

I'm not trying to be a smart *&%, but just be aware that things companies tell new hires is often flawed and sometimes intentionally deceitful.

They're still interviewing and they're still scheduling classes...they've just consolidated a few classes and report a 'slowing'.

Wonder when the hiring minimums will start to go back up.

Yes, I know that. What I'm trying to get across is that those guys who say, "They can't cut us, we have a contract which says we get 80% of the flying" just might be looking at this with rose colored glasses. I've been in the 121 game for 13 years, 5 1/2 with ASA. I've seen managements break contracts with employees and suppliers, and let's face it, Skywest and ASA are nothing more than suppliers of lift to Delta. If you don't have a plan B other than putting blind faith in your executive suite, you'll be nothing more than a skidmark on the bottom of their shoe as they run to cash their golden parachutes.

Or just forget all that I said. You'll be fine. The actual plan is to transfer all NB flying to the regionals because you just do it so much better. You are the new Masters of the Universe.

With the fuel price soaring insanely, it is not surprising DAL is trying to cut back on 50 seat, 76 seat RJ flying. Every contract has potential loopholes and DAL will find ways to break it. Having said that, if Skywest is already operating at minimum, DAL will most likely cut back from RAH and others.

Merger is likely to go through, so after that all bets are off. It should be an interesting year.

They may continue to hire as normal , but with no class dates scheduled where does that leave these new hires? Seems like alot of you guys might be in the pool for a while till they get things straightened out on this fuel deal. Hopefully for yall It's not going to take them as long as some to fire up some more classes.
I am not being sarcastic towards u or any of the new hire guys, believe me I want you guys to have class dates and for them to continue to hire and have classes as planned, believe me I'm hoping for all of the initial seniority I can get!!!!!
