Default Teachers

Teachers can start out as much as 59K per year as a high school teacher. More than most regional captains. (Pleas see thread titled: Jobs that start out at over 50K)

Teachers have much more time at home each year.

Teachers have a full government sponsored retirement.

Teachers get every week end and holiday off. Two weeks in December. One week in the spring and the entire summer off.

Pilot get.... well you guys all know about that.

Where in the world are your entry-level K-12 teachers starting out at $60,000 a year?

I live in one of the most high-paying K-12 school districts in the nation. It is #1 in this state and top 50 in the USA last I read. They start at $35,000 and not one of them makes more than $90,000 a year after they reach that ceiling after 12-15 years with a master's degree.

They bring massive amounts of work home with them for at least 140 days out of the year and in addition to that they spend weekends grading more papers and preparing report card scores and preparing new lesson plans and the list goes on.

An airline pilot lineholder getting 13-15 days off per month who has a short commute or lives in base undoubtedly has a better quality of life than the teacher, and, unless they are an FO at a regional, they probably make just as much money if not more.

Those are facts.

Please Skyhigh, they may start high but dont finish very high either, I would bang my head against the asphalt if I had to Teach ungrateful kids about stuff they could care less about or really don't need to know. You gave up, I am 27 I will get to a major airline and I will make more money then any teacher I know, will it be easy? No, but what in life is easy, its the journey not the destination my bro...............

Teachers have the summer off, whoopdydoo, I would rather have a 3 to maybe 4 day work week all year long and be able to manipulate my schedule to have large blocks of days off, not to mention the travel bennies and overnights with good people and great cities.

Real jobs get real wages in kind for the efforts it took in training and education to get there. No status. No fun. High Pay. Jobs like: Plumber, Dentist, Accountant and Police Officer.

Other jobs are of the leisure/fun variety. Big fun and Big status. Low pay. Jobs like: Fishing Guide, Ski instructor, Airline Pilot.

Then again some jobs people are drawn to for personal satisfaction reasons. low fun, some status, Big satisfaction. Lower wages. Jobs like: Teacher, minister, social worker.

People are paid according to the total compensation they receive and drives they may have for pursuing the profession. As individuals we collectively decide on our pay by what we accept. No one is going to drill teeth unless they are handsomely rewarded however everyone will line up to put on a brand new uniform and play airline pilot all day.

In the end we all collectively have created employer expectations by the great lengths we go through to get the job and then the massive sacrifices we endure to keep them.

Want a real income and life then get a real job. Simple.

Getting back to one of my earlier posts on this thread you never answered the question if you think acting is a real job? Anyone who says actors work hard is so full of you know what that their eyes are brown, yet they get paid VERY well. So well in fact you have 95% of those in the Screen Actors Guild union working for less than $5,000 a year yet can't fathom leaving the business on the SLIM chance they get "discovered" and attain this high salary. So, is acting a REAL job since its so well paid?

I am in the same boat... and the journey is kind of fun. I've had fun as a student, instructor, freight dog, and now as a regional FO. Would I change anything??? Maybe a few little things here and there, but for the most part I am happy.

SkyHigh....I am glad you enjoy writing, and sharing your insights...that is good. But as a C-150 Capt (and yes, I realize you used to be more heavily invovled) you need to just relax---layoff your criticism of this job/career/industry---we all make choices. This industry is what it is, all of us 20-some year old regional guys know what we signed up for. Is there room for improvement? Yes. I got a degree in finance, and keep in touch with several buddies from that field. They are traveling all over (in addition to their office work). Leaving on a Sunday to make a Monday meeting...spending Monday in meetings Tues-Wed in a conference, and back in the office Thurs-Fri). Essentially some of these guys work 6 days a week, have a laptop to bring home.... do work after dinner... trying to make it to the top---to be a big shot... just like most of us are trying to make it to the majors.

Pilots check in at domicile.... and 2, 3, or 4 days later they check out. They don't bring any work home with them...and like I said...flying is the best part-time job out there. I'm sorry you gave up.. but I applaud you for doing so. I actually respect you more than the guys who sit there and complain for 4 days straight about how much their life sucks. Because they're on their 3rd wife, with two kids, and rent a house. If more of them would just realize they are miserable and get out (like you did) it'd make it a lot easier for some of us in the other seat.

I read a few articles that claim pilot pay is $300,000. Do you believe everything you read?

Ok, here is an example of why I am probably tearing into you.....

"It is a CRIME to be forced away from your family." and comments like that. I just can't get forget the crazy "it's humiliating to bring food with you on a trip" comment either.

Uh, it's a choice to be a pilot. It's no secret you are away from home. Anyone that becomes a pilot and is shocked by the fact that they end up away from home is a fool.

Try being truly forced away....by Bush and his cronies (and dummy me voted for the bafoon) to Iraq. You think those guys/gals get the money they deserve for putting their lives on the line for primadonnas like you? Skyhigh, get some perspective buddy.
