I once got bumped to first class on a *gasp* CAL deadhead!!!
(I'm a lowly ExpressJet guy, used to being treated just slightly better than lav waste by CAL agents, especially when deadheading.)
PS
GO TEXANS!!! Spank that kitty

Workin' for XJet last year, I was non-revving on CAL back home after just passing my Commercial-ride and the F/A overhead me talking to the Pilots...she told me to "get up here in Row 1" and then proceeded to drink me silly, actually tossing me beer after beer. I think I was on number 3 by 10K feet LoL
Guess it's just the cute-face ;-)

In additon to just trying to be a pleasant jumpseater, I've found bringing good smoked salmon to the crew also ups my odds of flying first class. (At least on Alaska.) Has anyone done anything similar?

The best thing you can ever do...before you say a single word to the captain or First Officer is go right up to the Flight Attendant with the best smile and in the world and tell them "Hey there, I'm trying to catch a ride...is it ok with you if I go talk to the Captain?" It makes them feel pretty special. Make some nice small talk with the crew, says thanks, whatever...then on the way out, make sure you talk to the same FA again and say "Hey, thanks for letting me on board, I really appreciate it blah blah blah". This got me pulled outta my coach seat on AirTran and up into the last first class seat while at least 5 other AIRTRAN PILOTS rode coach. Their reasoning? "You were the polite commuter this morning." In fact, if there's an open first class seat...the only time I remember not getting up there was on American when I was in training.
That move is going into storage for future recall.

I brought the last crew I commuted on some homemade candy...and ended up on first. Even with the work that goes into such things, it's still the cheapest ride home you'll find. With ol' Lakes Air being a UAL codeshare, I usually have pretty good luck getting first on them, if it is indeed open.
