Just because you CAN get hired without your CFI doesn't mean you should. I was a military pilot for 5 years and thought I knew it all. When I got my CFI-I and taught for 650 hours l learn an enormous amount. It will make you a better pilot.

If you can get a real job flying frieght or something, that's just as good. But the guys that are having trouble at ASA are having it while in IOE and when they get sent to the line are the guys who only have their ratings and purchased some block time to get their logbook up. The experience you get with a "first job" like traffic watch, flight instructing, or small frieght is HUGE!

I've heard we recently fired a couple of new hires after they went through extra sims, extra IOE, and were repeatedly sent back to training dept. by line captains because they just couldn't cut it.

You don't want to have getting fired for being a bad pilot on your resume.

Don't be in such a hurry.... get the experience, then show up when you know you will be successful.

I got my private and thought I knew something.....Got my Instrument, and realized how much I didn't know after private. Then I got my CFI and CFII , taught a while and realized, again, how much I didn't know after getting the Instrument.

You never know what you don't know until you learn it.

The AGI is not a bad thing to get. It is just the same CFI written you took before. So it costs $60 bucks to take the written. You have the AGI forever and if you ever decide to CFI again some day you can get the Gold Seal.

Things like CFI, CFII, MEI, AGI, IGI although not necessary does show initiative that may pay off some day

Getting your MEI and never using it probably was a waste unless you didn't have to pay for those 15 PIC. The real question is whether this dude will let his CFI lapse. If so, then yeah, he wasted his money. Could've gone solo or on an IFR cross-country and been better off. If he renews it, then he's probably thinking long-term. It was drilled into my head not to let that CFI lapse. I'd say that's good advice.

He said it was standard procedure and necessary to get the MEI and AGI ratings to get hired by a regional airline. His flight hours are right about at minimums (500/100)

Is he right, or did he just waste a bunch of money?

I think it would be pointless to put a wet rating like that on a resume. Almost like paying for a CRJ standards course?
If you're going to play the single track then yes it was a waste. If you want a few backup plans then no it's not.

I've heard the same thing not just from older piltos but from the Feds themselves. There are a few places where you can keep it current on-line. I think AOPA does it. You could also go tackle one of those addition ratings.

Wierd thought. Does getting your AGI extend it for another two years? Do they give you a new license for that?

Getting the MEI written done without the actual certificate is kinda a waste. I wouldn't list having "MEI Written Complete" on a resume. Getting an AGI/IGI certificate isn't necessarily a waste.

Personally I have an IGI (and one day when I get motivated, I'll go back and get my AGI just cuz).

Getting an MEI isn't a waste either, however it isn't necessary either. There have been times (particularly now) that I wish that I had finished my MEI. Although you don't think you will ever use those ratings once you land your first airline gig, you never know. I know that now that I am in a corporate environment, there have been times when an MEI would have been useful (such as both crewmembers in a 2 pilot flight department are no longer instrument current and we need to get an IPC done to fly IFR- would have been a lot easier to go up VFR in the plane we regularly fly and do an IPC instead of going and getting one somewhere else. Too bad neither of us have an MEI...)

As for the CFI ratings, you can never go wrong with teaching. It's not for everybody, but to this day I regard my teaching days as the period where my flying abilities were at their finest. If you have it, pay the money and keep it renewed! American Flyers course is the best out there. Pay once for lifetime renewals.

Waste? Not a Waste?

Did you learn something that will make you a better pilot? If so, it's never a waste.

Did you do see the MEI as a waste if you can get a shiney jet job without one?

Well. That I can't argue with.....

Right. I knew that. I was, uhhh, just testing you.

Actually, IMO it's a good rating to have. You can't go wrong with teaching. (Oh and I'm an EX-121 guy. Don't forget that!)
