Finally some sensible advice . Always have a career backup plan, make sure you can get a job in the "real world" in case things go sour with your airline or you somehow loose your pilot ticket.

Or perhaps dabble in other investments that you could turn into a career whilst you're on top? For instance, invest in a rental property or two just in case the "inevitable" happens?

I agree, but that "other" plan doesnt have to be putside of aviation. There are many jobs flying airplanes other than airlines. People on her eare so into the airlines they forget about flying for the FAA, flying for law enforcement, teaching aviation in a university program and many others.

Sure you wont make $200k but $75K isnt bad too me

True,

I read a recent article about a guy who does instrument approach calibration flights for the FAA across the country. He just shoots approaches and gets paid $100k+/yr.

There is something about putting all your eggs in one basket that scares me. I am glad I have at least 2 alternative careers, connections and experience to fall back on.

I agree though.... some upward movement is happening at the big boys.. and as long as they are reasonable in their requests things will be okay for everyone.
As long as reasonable means getting back what they gave up in sham bankruptcy, with interest, then yeah, sounds good.

Well lets hope they get it back, but I wouldnt bet on getting it all back in one fell swoop.

Sky, Glad its working out for you. Hope the credit crunch doesnt bite you too bad. I have some friends in the lending business and there take is lending for investment properties is going to get a bit tighter before it gets better. Good luck.

Sky, I've gotta ask one thing... If the crunch ends up costing you your business what will you do then?

Will you take another crack at aviation and find a real estate message board to educate newbie real estate agents on the follies of the business?

P.S - As Tiger Woods says, "If you can't laugh at yourself, Then who can you laugh at?"

$75K is OK if you're 23...if you're 40, it's nowhere close to adequate (unless you still live a 23 y.o. lifestyle).

$75K is inadequate for...
2 car payments
Mortgage
Child expenses
Kid's College savings
Your retirement savings (regionals don't have pensions )
If your spouse works he/she will need to make BANK to cover daycare.

You could maybe scrape by if:
Have a single, cheap car
Live in marginal housing with scary neighbors
Plan on having your kids join the army in lieu of college (or maybe get a sports scholarship)
Plan on driving a cab after mandatory airline retirement.
