Default jumping around

from someone who is still learning the industry here:
when signing on with an airline, are there rules stating that you are required to stay at an airline for a year or 2 before leaving... i hear this is the case at Colgan, where you must stay for a year...
conversely, do pilots stay at an airline for 6 months, put a couple hundred more hours in the books and look elsewhere right away because they recently met the mins for a better airline... what are some of the rules on this? is it practiced? etc.

I all depends on the company and the individual...seniority is everything in this business.

If a company requires you to sign a training contract then you have to stay or pay the balance (pro rated) to the company. My company has seen F/Os complete IOE and go to another regional right away. On the other hand my company has hired F/Os from other 121 carriers right off of IOE. That is up to the pilot and how much seniority he/she is willing to give up.

Default Ioe

Initial Operating Experience. It is where you, as the pilot fresh out of the simulator, will fly the line with a captain that could fly the airplane by himself if you turn out to be a flake in the cockpit. This happens right after the sim check but before you are given free reign to terrorize other line captains. This way you can kinda get a feel for things with someone who has lots of experience.

so in other words, you have a regular schedule like every other pilot, but everyday you get in the cockpit, its another checkride, day after day after day...
.. and yes, i already know, youre supposed to fly all of the trips like a checkride
