Any chance you can post what a month of primarily high speeds looks like? Does one high speed count as two days of work? Thanks

One more question for you guys and thanks for the replies.

What do you think the hiring picture at Mesaba will look like 6 months from now. Most of the jets should be online by then. Do you think it will still be strong due to Northwest hiring and normal attrition. Or do you think it will really slow down when all these jets are here.

Well I wouldnt want to be at the very end of the hiring push...but from what I have read and heard that wont be for a while. And even at the end, all the company would need to do is allow the Northwest flow through to take more pilots and that would help things out too. I think for now they have it set at 3 captains a month.

Just my take on things.

2 on, 3off, 4 on, 2 off, 4 on, 3 off, 4 on, 3 off, 2 on.

High Speed lines are 11 days off and only pay minimum guarantee. The MEM highspeeds are pretty nice layovers. MSP and DTW are short in most cases and you usually need to supplement with a nap during the day.

Not sure what you mean by "two days of work." If you are talking calendar days, then yes, but it is only one duty period.

Based on what we know TODAY...

Our seniority list is sitting at roughly 840 today. We need to grow it to about 1200 or so by the end of 2008. That leaves 360 to be hired. Averaging around 40 per month or so leaves us with about 9 more months of strong hiring. After that based on our fleet size of 102, hiring will slow again to cover attrition. Attrition right now is down to about 5 per month.

The flow to NWA and exodus to other carriers will have some effect and the number may again rise to 10-15/month.

So, if we here we are getting more aircraft next year, hiring will stay strong. If we stay with 36 900's, 49 Saabs and 17 200's, hiring will slow by end of next summer into fall.

Have you looked at the newest seniority list? #767 on the 8/14/07 list is now #752 on the 9/24/07 list. Thats attrition of 15 people in 1 month and 10 days.

Was this a fluke?

I think he was looking at attrition a little further up the list, where it matters a little more. If/when NWA begins hiring, expect to see that number substantially increase.

You need to look at the upper half of the list to judge attrition. What you are seeing are people that didn't show for training, quit during training, washed out or didn't like it after getting to the line.

Go look at #400 for example on the 9-24 list. That same individual was #407 in August and 409 at the beginning of July. That averages about 5 per month in round numbers. Movement in the captains ranks is what provides upgrade opportunities downstream.

I am a bit more skeptical of the flow-up if and when it is presented to us. Remember, we are wholly owned now. NWA is paying the bills here too now, as well as at Compass. Any pilot that flows up from here or Compass to the mainline is costing more $$ in training versus someone hired from say Champion, or Eagle, or Republic etc.

I imagine that the flow-up will be throttled somehow. I think someone mentioned 3 per month? I have not heard any rumors to that end, but it seems plausible.

Notice the word "hiring" in my previous post. The flow through is a whole other thing in itself.
