It just puts an unnecessary burden on the other pilot.
The POM encourages hand flying. Most people here became pilots to fly an airplane, it gets old letting the AP do everything. It makes sense to me to hand fly on non-busy takeoffs to stay sharp. It definitely takes more concentration to hand fly a takeoff up to 10,000. Also, the one time you need to hand fly after something goes wrong you will not only have confidence in flying the plane you will have practiced so you know exactly what you should be doing. There are captains that like to hand fly so this isn't an FO vs captain thing.

I shouldn't even dignify this with a response, however I was responding to the person who said they would rather sit reserve than flight instruct. I'm obviously well aware reserve is part of being at an airline you can't control for the most part. I also never said all. You are the only one who said all. I was refering to a specific post. Please don't put words in my mouth.

HAHAHA what a joke. By you saying this, I take it you thew your logbook in the trash once you got to your current position.
Now why would I have done that? I'm saying people are taking their jobs a little to lightly for having a couple hundred hours. That they are more worried about what goes in their log book than how they do their job. I'm not saying this is every one. A bunch of people I have flown with over the last few months have had this attitude. What does that have to do with throwing your log book in the trash? What are the FO's you have been flying with like?

Be careful about bashing people who are excited to advance in their careers. Just because someone is enthusiastic about moving on to greener pastures in the future doesn't mean they are any less committed to maintaining the brown, dormant grass that they are grazing in now....hopefully you follow the analogy.
It's not enthusiasm it's a lack of caring for the JOB that they have. If you build a structure you need a foundation to make it strong. You simply can't build the roof first. Hopefully you understand that anology. Show up to work and do you job you incidentally build time. Don't tell me you are here to build time, just do your job.

405PA-I am glad you are not on the hiring board here at Mesaba. It would be tough for us to hire anybody new here. They would all need 5000 hrs TT and 4000 hrs of instrument with 700 approaches down to absolute mins.

Anybody looking to apply at XJ just keep in mind that this attitude is not shared by everyone here. We are hiring guys with a couple thousand hrs and guys with less than 1000.

Hey everyone just wanted an insight on the relationship between management and the pilot group at Mesaba. My current airline has pretty bad relationship between the two. Also how are the pilot group and Mesaba ALPA relations? I would love to come work at a place where they try to work with each other to create a positive working environment.

lol i concur...now ready for this? most of the time i hand fly up to FL190-FL200 and coming in most times i'll fly down from 15,000. when i'm feeling wreckless i'll sometimes not even use the flight director.

granted i probably suck and no one has the heart to tell me but as long as the situation isn't too extreme i like to hand fly.

the best is when i disconnect the autopilot at like 12,000 and the captain is like "uh oh we've got a hero over here..." nooooo, we just sat here for two hours and you wouldnt tell me any funny stories and you didn't laugh at mine...so its time to have fun...

Been flying with a lot of sneior guys lately, its a blast. Get to hear all the stories from the days in the Metro and who can forget the Avro. All the captains I've flown with so far here have been great.

"Well ya know on the Avro, we used to..."

"The Avro was a REAL airliner..."

Gotta love the senior XJ drivers

Ive been at Mesaba a little over a year now and I can say that for the most part things are very positive. The company has undergone tremendous growth which has made pretty much everyone happy. Some things about management are "typical" but I enjoy working here. I can definitely say most everyone and everything has been positive so if you're coming from a negative experience, Mesaba should be a very welcome change for you. Welcome aboard! What eqpt and domicile are you in?
