Got another call today. Switched me from the 900 to the Saab on the 5th. Im actually really happy with that. I think ill like getting the experience in a TP now. Have only heard good things on here about the Saab (except for it getting real hot or real cold). But it should be a blast! Cant wait.

I bought some waterproof shoes from Red Wing and have been very happy with them. It sucks having to take them and all your winter gear off going through security but welcome to winter ops. Yet another good reason to be an FFDO ;-) Side note has anyone seen the Air Canada crew winter jackets? Fur lined parkas I'd love to have one of those on a DVL highspeed. It's bitter cold out there. FO's get yourself something that covers you face to. Those winds cut like knives. Also I like/use the mittens that flip open so you can use your fingers. I got a good pair at REI. Long underwear is good to. Did I mention it's cold in the SAAB? ;-) You'll look back on these years and smile. The flying is tough and brutal, but the crews work through it together and you'll have great memories from it.
sounds the exact same as flight instructing at UND up in GFK.

I have a question about night currency. My night currency will expire towards the end of ground school, so do I need to hurry and get night current before I go or will I get it at Mesaba at some point in training?

If you intend to still fly part 91 carrying passengers at night in your rental 172 or Baron, then you have to maintain your currency in category and class per 61.57

The way the regs read is that night landings isn't a req for currency in 121 ops. However, you still need the 3 night landings for 91 pax, which you will get in the sim. Someone correct me if my math wrong here.
§ 121.439 Pilot qualification: Recent experience.
(a) No certificate holder may use any person nor may any person serve as a required pilot flight crewmember, unless within the preceding 90 days, that person has made at least three takeoffs and landings in the type airplane in which that person is to serve. The takeoffs and landings required by this paragraph may be performed in a visual simulator approved under §121.407 to include takeoff and landing maneuvers. In addition, any person who fails to make the three required takeoffs and landings within any consecutive 90-day period must reestablish recency of experience as provided in paragraph (b) of this section.
§ 61.57 Recent flight experience: Pilot in command.
(b) Night takeoff and landing experience. (1) Except as provided in paragraph (e) of this section, no person may act as pilot in command of an aircraft carrying passengers during the period beginning 1 hour after sunset and ending 1 hour before sunrise, unless within the preceding 90 days that person has made at least three takeoffs and three landings to a full stop during the period beginning 1 hour after sunset and ending 1 hour before sunrise, and—
(i) That person acted as sole manipulator of the flight controls; and
(ii) The required takeoffs and landings were performed in an aircraft of the same category, class, and type (if a type rating is required).
(2) The takeoffs and landings required by paragraph (b)(1) of this section may be accomplished in a flight simulator that is—
(i) Approved by the Administrator for takeoffs and landings, if the visual system is adjusted to represent the period described in paragraph (b)(1) of this section; and
(ii) Used in accordance with an approved course conducted by a training center certificated under part 142 of this chapter.

It'll just cost you an extra $100 in the sim to get current. Payable to the instructor in cash

Thanks for helping me get that all sorted out. Another question for all you that have gone through the training. What is your recommendation on going home to visit during training on the weekend? I am thinking that if by some small chance that they take thanksgiving off that I will buy a ticket home to visit my wife and family. This way I will have a seat for sure. Of course this is all considering they do take off the holiday, and there is not any weather that might prevent me getting back in time.
