Yes it’s an FAA requirement to get the ATP. You can’t get around it. 25 of the 50 required must be in an airplane.

Cool thanks for reply.
Do you have any advice on getting ready for atp written and do you have to have it done before applying?

Sheppard Air.

You must complete the ATP-CTP first. Paid for by whoever hires you.

No, it’s also an FAA requirement you must take an approved course prior to taking the written. The ATP-CTP you will hear it called. The regional you choose will pay for it. You don’t want to spend that out of your pocket. I don’t remember exactly how much it is but it’s in the range of $6-10K.

The regional will probably also provide you with a Sheppard Air subscription, though that may come through your ATP class provider. Unlikely you will have to pay for it yourself.

Basically you will go to ATP-CTP for about 10 days, take your written on the last day, then start your airline training the next week. You will be able to download Sheppard day 1 of ATP and I wouldn’t worry about studying much before then. You will just need to spend every evening studying while at ATP.

All you really need to do is send out applications and get your 10 hrs multi.

And as far as advice on picking a regional, pick a base first then pick the regional with the lowest upgrade time to that base. If you really don’t care at all then good luck choosing. I’m at ExpressJet and I would recommend it.

I appreciate the info , very helpful.
In terms of base I don't really care I just want to stay at whatever base so i can avoid commuting . In terms of which regionals I will take a look at expressjet. I really only care about moving forward aviation wise. I am 25 so hopefully not get stuck too long in regionals .

You need 50 hours ME for the ATP. You can credit 25 hours of airline training sim, so you need to show up with 25 hours of actual ME airplane time. So you need ten more hours.

....but that fluctuates based on the Regional and how much they are hiring right now. My Regional went from 50 hours required by the time you show up for class, then went down to 35 or so when hiring was ramping up, then back to 50 when they were flush with applicants.

Correct. Absolute legal min will be 25 ME hours when you start class, if the regional allows. When I got hired they required 300 ME.
