ALPA..Let them in or not?
Currently employed at Colgan and trying to figure out if I should send in the ALPA card. I'd appreciate hearing from any ALPA pilots and let me know how you feel about them representing you. FLAME ON!!

Tebpilot, you've got 19 postings so you should be able to use the search function. If you search for union related threads or SKW threads you should gain all the info you need. Most all SKW threads have turned into ALPA arguments seeing that we’re in the middle of our union drive.
But, here we go, my card is in.

TEB,
You should vist the ALPA website and read through their mission statment. Then I would look at your situation and see if Colgan has any issues you would like to improve or at least share a voice in.
Signing the ALPA card does not automatically make you a union shop. It is mearly a way of informing the company/ALPA/Labor board that you are interested in having an opportunity to unionize.
You will hear many ideas about how evil airline managment is and how evil ALPA can be. My advice would be to use good common sence and realize that you must invest some time and effort in your search for improvment at Colgan.
Good Luck

send your card in if you are on the fence, that at least opens it up for a vote. remember that in the long run a union will do more good for your career. maybe not so much at colgan, but think about when youre at a major

IMHO, unions are necessary. I'm not a gung ho union guy, but I can tell you that they do offer a venue if the company doesn't play by the rules, or if something goes wrong and the punishment is too severe, at least there is someone that can challenge their decision.
If that is not enough, there's this.....
Some people at the fore mentioned airline believe that the "threat" of a union is a greater tool than actually having a union. That is open for debate, but what is for sure, is that if you are getting a better and better contract because your employer is "keeping up with the Jones" then you are profiting off of other peoples sacrifice. That "threat" is not free. It comes from thousands of pilots paying dues, putting pressure on Congressmen, pilots striking, etc.
I for one would never want to benefit from someone else doing all the hard work.
