PILOT and AIRLINE Statistics 1996-2005
You'll all be happy. I won't babble. I just wanted to post some interesting information regarding where the airline industry is going!!!
Notice the downward trend
1) ORIGINAL CERTIFICATES ISSUED 1996-2005
http://www.faa.gov/data_statistics/a...a/air17-05.xls
2)ADDITIONAL RATINGS and CERTIFICATES ISSUED 1996-2005
http://www.faa.gov/data_statistics/a...a/air18-05.xls
3)AVERAGE AGE OF ACTIVE PILOTS BY CATEGORY 1996-2005

THIS IS WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO. NOTICE THE "USER FEE" PROPOSED BY OUR PRESIDENT GEORGE BUSH. NOT GOOD. IT WILL ONLY INCREASE THE DOWNWARD TREND OF THE ABOVE GRAPHS.
4) FORECASTS FOR GROWTH IN AIR TRAVEL

Now and in the future. Until I see a few consecutive years of growth, I do not think the bottom has hit yet. Can't wait to see 2006's data.

Look at the average age increasing three years over the span of ten years, when that rate reverses, there is a pilot shortage. This will happen in the future, good news if you are young and getting ready to make the move to the majors.

Labor Supply Vs. Labor Demand
Sorry but there is not a shortage of pilots in the industry. Those numbers could show that people don’t want to become pilots anymore because of the loss of quality of life or pay. Those numbers could easily show that the demand for pilot is already oversaturated by the supply causing the loss of pay and future applicants. If you are implying the industry will get worse as the number of pilot applicants goes down than I must disagree, in fact it may improve. Once again pay and QOL = Labor Demand and Supply.
I think that Majors are going to slow down in growth and regional carriers are the only ones that could expect growth, but with the over supply of pilot at the regional carrier the pay and QOL will continue to get worse. I just don’t buy into there is a pilot shortage with the current pay rates. Just my two cents I don’t want to make anyone angry.
