Military Pay vs Regional

Granted, you can't put a price tag on a 120-day deployment to the desert. Leaving your family for that amount of time is a heavy cost...at the same time you can't put a price tag on flying a low level at 300kts, or drinking beers with your bros after a 5 ship.
I agree with an earlier post...reserves is probably the best way to go.

did you volunteer to stay out there that long? you must be a glutton for punishment
like i said, anyone who's on the fence about it should do the reserves or guard. the threat of being activated, especially in the air force, is gone so you really do have a lot of freedom and control over what you want to do with your life/career/etc. you will make as much money as you want to make that way.

Most importantly, for my family's well being and peace of mind, I got out. I don't regret the decision one bit.

Oh I know. I did 15 months as an S1 and 2 years as an S4. Neither are glorious. If I had stayed in, I was next in line for company command. But with my luck, it would have been HHC, so there's more time away from the aircraft.

In the Air Force, those deployments are voluntary. Theres hardly any units still out there that are activated. They are using an all volunteer force out there, and people are doing it for the money or to serve their country, whichever. but for a typical reservist like me, i will never have to spend time there unless i ask to.

OK, that can be kind of a drag, but they did pay me to live in europe and I got to see a bunch of places I never thought I'd see. Most of them were much cooler than I'd imagined
Then of course, you'll never be called out on your day off, you'll never lose control of your schedule, and you'll never have to move.
