Sometimes you want to get a lot done and be productive on long overnights or reserve sits; a laptop can be a hassle but also really nice in those situations.
The issue I encounter is protection. If you stick it in that Luggageworks 22" outer pouch, there's not much armor if your bag gets bumped a lot. Or worse: what if you need to gate check it? We see how bags get tossed around on the ramp, or my favorite, falling 9 feet off the bag loader.
There aren't a lot of flight bags that have a dedicated, cushioned compartment I've seen. If anyone has one or knows of one, please chime in. Maybe just put a hard case on the outside of the laptop and take your chances stuffing it into the flight bag?

Thanks for all the advice. I bit the bullet and bought a 15 incher. I needed a new laptop to bring with me for training any way where I will be spending weeks in a hotel room. I'll make the decision as I gain experience whether I will bring it on trips once I start flying or just use the Ipad. The one I had was a 2010 HP 17 inch screen that literally weighed like 20lbs and now takes 15 min to start up.

I travel with my 15 inch in order to get school work done when on the road. And while it's new and lightweight model, it still adds a noticeable amount of weight. This laptop however is not dedicated to traveling so it's a good allround size for me. If I were to get a dedicated travel laptop I would opt for something smaller. I find that as long as I'm not deadheading and throwing my bag in the back there is sufficient protection for it(my previous 15 inch laptop did receive a fair amount of road rash, but it also had a pretty flimsy plastic chassis). If I'm dead heading I typically pull it out of the bag and keep it with me in the cabin, which is a bit of a hassle.

I’ve got an 11 inch Lenovo I paid $100 for brand new a year ago and is worth it by far. I do schoolwork on it and use it for items the iPad can’t handle such as trip trades (FLICA). The smaller takes some getting used to but it is nice that it fits into any full size iPad rated bag.

Do you guys carry an extra ipad or just use the company ipad for netflix and browsing the internet?
Also, I have a nice but heavy gaming laptop...as a commuter on reserve, it's it worth to carry with me to spare some time or better just to have a light weight one?
