It's one of the silliest things, but power outlets easily accessible by the bed. Bonus points if it's on the nightstand. There's nothing more irritating than stumbling in after a long day and having to move the mattress and/or nightstand just to get to a power outlet to charge a phone.

About a year ago I was waiting for a 430-5am van or something at the holiday inn ROC, manager was shooing out a "lady of the evening" and her John. Said it's a common issue. Kinda put a bad taste in my mouth staying there. My company also seems to stay at quite a bunch of them too. Maybe I'm just bored of the shampoo they carry.

Biggest improvement I would like to see, would be that the hotel chains gives us points or credit for our stay. With as much time as we spend on the road this could be looked at as lost compensation. At my former employers we kept all of our hotel points, and frequent flyer miles. In fact, with one employer it was contractual. I could take my family on vacation for month each year with the points I earned. You can also exchange points for gift card's with just about any major retailer. Funny how the the travel service we use will give us discounted hotel rooms for vacation, so not only they keep any perks they get from the major hotel chains, they make even more money on those very perks when they sell them back to us at a discounted rate.
It would be a nice benefit to have, that wouldn't cost airline that much money. I mean we have to have hotels, why shouldn't the pilot group benefit?

There are a couple of hotels here and there that will let you, but the vast majority will not since the rate is negotiated down to a low corporate rate.

Good points on this thread.
The ideal hotel for me would have a decent free breakfast, be quiet and near some kind of downtown or area with food and things to do. A nice gym is an added bonus.
Springhills, Hyatt Places, and Holiday Inn Expresses are usually the ones that fall in this category.
As far as regular Holiday Inns... they lack the free amenities and a lot of them are in buildings that are far past their prime with old uncomfortable beds and general cleanliness issues. My company used to stay at a couple nice ones, but most of the ones in the cities we overnight in now are some of the worst hotels.
Sheratons, Westins and occasionally Hiltons and Marriotts are exceptionally nice and I'm willing to forgo the free breakfasts for a nicer more luxurious hotel. These tend to have better gyms, too.

This is just about the only thing I care about. Beds, towels, coffee, gym, whatever. If there isn't easily accessible power by the bed, then nothing else matters.

I'll throw in that a lot of hotels I stay in are stuck in 2006 level internet speeds. I'm not asking for 200mb/s but cmon, when the data on my phone is faster than the hotel's internet there is a problem.
Pet peeve of mine is when the housekeepers fold the pillow case into the pillow to make a tight little ball in an attempt to mask a pillow that needed to be replaced 4 years ago. If I unravel said pillow and am able to close my fist around it it is time for a new one.
I don't have enough long overnights at my regional to care about anything other than a comfy bed/pillows and some good internet. Downtown hotels are fantastic, but who cares when the overnight is only 12:30.

All Hotels have in room fridge and microwave
All serve breakfast and have in room coffee
All have fast free wi-fi
All I've been at had fitness rooms. Most had indoor pools also. Only one I've been to didn't.
All are in downtown type areas with plenty to do
Every one I've been at had outlets or even USB on the nightstand
