However:

Only full time active duty get a housing allowance.

The maximum housing allowance (Four Star General ) is $1429

Per Diem (TDY Pay) is based on location and is not a flat rate.

Can't collect double per diem (15 days home to work AND overseas)

Crewmembers pay for their rooms (Unlike most airlines) and meals.

Hazardous duty (combat) pay for 1/Lt. is $150.00

The bottom line is what you take home at the end of the month. I spent three years flying C-141s in and out of a combat zone. We often spent more then our per diem allowance on meals and rooms. In the end we were lucky to break even. The tax exclusion made life a little easier.

The flying experience was priceless.

Some of your data is off. BAH is also adjusted for location. I was getting $1900+ as an O-3 in the DC area and never paid for a hotel TDY that I wasn't reimbursed for. Domestically, I was clearing 6K a month on full-time orders(anything over 30 consecutive days now gets you full BAH and flt pay).

Absolutely agree. There are many exceptions to the rule. Where I live (Key West) there is a significant housing cost of living adjustment for active duty military. I was trying to compare "norms" - 2/Lt. Jones, new Copilot, living in military base housing, and TDY 15 to 20 days per month, compared to FO Smith a new Regional pilot.

I think this discussion is hijacking the thread. My apologies to those who think so. More then willing to discuss military pay or flying via PM.

Thanks to all for comments and discusssion.

Thanks to the military crews that are flying missions as we speak.
