Which airline you're talking about is going to make a large difference in this...

At SkyWest, you would get DTW right away in training on the CRJ, and you would probably be on reserve for a month to 6 weeks depending how soon you are eligible to bid for a schedule. Reserve means being within 2 hours of the airport, so 1:20 is doable if you bag is always packed and I. Your car ready to go. Once you get a line, you can do anything from a 1 day trip to a 4 day trip, but Detroit has mostly 3 and 4 day trips because it's mostly commuters.

In reserve, you'll be given reserve blocks of 12 hour on call availability periods, 18 days a month. The blocks will be anywhere from 1 day to 6 days in a row.

As a line holder, you'll fly a few days in a row with a few days off in between for anywhere between 11-18 days off a month (12-15 is more typical), with the ability to pick up extra flying on your days off.

At Endeavor, folks are being awarded DTW on their first vacancy after initial. Some people who haven't finished ground yet are scheduled to move to DTW on this last vacancy.

Endeavor has a two hour callout. Similar stuff to what is posted above for Skywest. Endeavor also offers five day trips, if you want to block more working days together. Reserve time is variable, Detroit was slightly senior for a while, but last two vacancies have moved plenty of folks back in.

Thanks, for responses.

How does reserve work in regards to getting the call?

Meaning.....

If in a reserve block they call you, can it be a consecutive day trip, or covering legs during that reserve block of 12 hrs?

Im thinking if u are assigned x number of "reserve blocks" and they can use you for consecutive day trips by calling u during reserve 12 he block, time away from home could spiral out of control.

Thanks, very rudementrary understanding of airline schedules.

Depends how many days in a row you're on reserve. If you have a 4 day block of reserve, they could call you in for anything from a turn to a 4 day trip.

With DTW being a junior base, you shouldn't be on reserve too long and then you can bid for whatever you want (like locals). With that said, if you don't want to spent time away from home taking an airline job may not be the best path.

DTW at SkyWest would be easy to get out of training. Reawrves have two hours to get to the airport, I'm not sure how long it takes to get from the parking lot to the gate, so can't help you there. Upgrades are around a year and a half or so, crews in DTW are great and the trips are ok. Chicago has better flying, but if you live in DTW, nothing beats driving to work. Good luck!

There's no need for this nonsense. DTW isn't anywhere near the worst parts of the Detroit metro area

Skywest or Endeavor should be your two airlines to consider. You can drink the kool aid and work for peanuts with no incentives to go there or come to a wholly owned make 65K plus your first year and actually afford to have a life. I live 1 hour west of detroit so in your neck of the woods and I just got back to DTW as a captain and I see juniors guys are coming in below me on each vacancy now...Good luck with your choice....don't even consider blow jets...you might not have a job in 2 years.
