Makes sense. Even with loans, there still has to be something worthwhile on the other side so the investment in the expensive training makes sense. No one wants to pull out a $100,000 education loan knowing they'll only be making $30,000 per year. Too much risk with little guaranteed reward.

The rate of a loan should have nothing to do with the cost of training. The flight schools don't make money on the interest.

Every graduating HS class in America that has at least one kid dreaming of flight.

Why don't the regionals do what the military does, train a guy from 0-to-hero and once they are a hero give them a 6-8 year commitment. The commitment can even have a clause about paying for your training if you leave early, since it is easier to quit a regional than it is the military.
This way the regionals have a pilot pipeline, and the pilots get free training and a guaranteed job.
Basically a win-win

Parents don't always let their kid make dumb, err.. risky investments. Plus the cost of flight training has skyrocketed in recent years. It's not such an attractive financial risk to take anymore.

Sorry for the reposts, but this is too important to get buried in pages of chatter.

If it is easier for the student to pay for the training, the flight schools will increase their rates. For example, I know for a fact that flight schools will increase the cost of training for students that have university (loan) or government funded training (GI Bill, VA) simply because they can "afford" the surcharges, and the increased prices don't affect their decision to fly for "free"... The government should stay far, far away from this, on the civilian side.

I worked in an abinitio program where we trained 250 hour pilots to get a Dc-9 type rating. These pilots came out with a good understanding of how to fly in airline environment by teaching them dispatch rules, decision making and how to interpret and follow the rules in an FOM. It does not take 1500 hundred hours to be proficient in operating an aircraft in the airline environment. ....
Instructing in a fixed based or full motion simulator is great but it is no replacement for experience. I am quite sure I could take any one of your 250 hour wonders and with no effort expose their ignorance.
