Let me be the lone voice in the desert...maybe.
If you are currently meeting or exceeding hiring reqs then don't bother.
If you are currently instructing then by all means, get your MEI.
Additional rating equals additional skill.
It will also allow you to pick up some additional multi engine time here and there.
If you decide to do so you can wait till you're up for your CFI renewal as an additional rating will accomplish that also.

If you don't need it to get the required multi hours then forget it. Think about it this way. If you for whatever reason fail the checkride you will be listing that on your applications and that will not look good. This goes for anything, wait until you get the career company of your choice before adding that seaplane rating you have always wanted. Failures for anything even if unrelated will have to be disclosed and can cost you a job or "points."

What a pointless argument.
What if you blow a tire and run of the runway on your next flight?
What if OMG

Getting an MEI is not an additional skill in regards to qualifications. The major airlines don't care what kind of instruction you are giving and they don't even look at your instructor certificate. There is no spot on an application for "dual multi given." If you are getting enough flying without it, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.

It's absolutely not a pointless argument. Taking additional, unneeded checkrides creates unnecessary risk to your application. Risk versus reward.

If you want it go get it. I don't think it matters either way with the Majors.

I'm getting mine so I can go FAA in a few years when an opening finally comes up at my home FSDO.

Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, join the FAA

And make a whole lot more money than a regional pilot will. But who needs money?

Well..you need money to get your MEI..
And you need to do a check ride to join the FAA..which you could fail.
That would look really bad.

Back in the day, the long long ago (like 3-4 years) almost all instructors needed to get MEIs in order to get the 100-200 hours of multi time to get hired by a regional. Now it doesn't matter.
