It's an air/ground communication system. Wt & balance numbers are just one example of the data which can be sent to the aircraft. Other examples are weather warnings, reroutes, etc. Crews can request information from the dispatcher or report passenger problems, and block times are automatically sent in.

"3 or 4 take off briefings before getting to runway", not! One Departure brief at gate before door is closed to confirm correct flight plan/runway and a take off brief at runway stating 5 important items, runway,altitude,fix,engine fail procedure, heading assigned.

Hah yeah you definitely do not have to brief the airport you are taking off from to the guy next to you three times. You just have to check once that the ACARS data is not only for the correct runway but correct airport as well. If you don't initialize the airports properly you could get takeoff data for 23 in CLT instead of 23 in OAJ for example.
