Funny how the consequence of staffing the airline through senior manning has discouraged FOs from flying to attain 1000 hours in order to avoid the QOL consequences associated with the policy.

I know a few. With so much of the compensation structure for First Officers tilted towards bonuses, it simply doesn't cost that much to drop 15-20 hours a month. One's hourly rate actually increases the less one flies, given the bonuses are paid regardless of credit hours earned.

What's that tell you? Captain upgrade is considered punishment as opposed to advancement and reward here at PSA. At least 4-6 senior pilots are forced to upgrade with each CA announcement, not sure how many bid the position just to avoid the forced displacement out of base. Yes, there are those that genuinely want the upgrade too, but speaks volumes to our horrible reserve rules, and lack of financial incentive.

But this problem has been of their own making. If the rates were higher across the board, and the bonuses were lower, they'd get a lot more people willing to pick up more time.

Bingo...but what does the company think? They would like to limit the hours that you can drop, not increase pay.

Avg pay rate magically doesn't look so horrible
