Agreed, both companies a good one ones and if I lived in a PDT base, odds are I would have gone that route. Both also are growing, but have a high turn over as well. You can hold lines at DC, Dayton, and Cincinnati pretty much right out of IOE according to the last bid results Tall Flyer posted. Knoxville and Charlotte are about 5 months after IOE to hold a line.
To answer your question...no you are not crazy to consider your options and think about commuting, but even with SAP odds are you would have a better QOL living in base without it. Let's say that you did go to PSA and picked DCA and were able to hold a line out of IOE so you could SAP...you still will end up with some trips that are not commutable so you are coming in a day early or leaving the day after. Sure, you would be able to SAP holidays off, and maybe work it so you have quite q few days strung together for a long break, but you are losing other days to commuting.
It really will depend on you and what factors within the QOL category is most important to you. Most folks put living in/close to base pretty high on the list, but you might have other factors driving you decision. Interview at both if you can and go from there. You might only get a CJO from one so the decision is made for you.

Odds are you are right, but it will depend on what type of trips the guy wants. A PHL to DCA commute is short with quite a few flights so it is easily doable. With SAP he shouldn't lose that many days to commuting, if any. Some would still argue that you should not commute when you are already living in base. I'm just saying that it really comes down to what is important to the guy.

Ive said this many times on this forum, but SAP is an unbelievable QOL builder and was the main reason I came to PSA. So far, a year and half later, no regrets at all. Are there other issues with the company, sure. But as a 1st year FO at a regional airline, my first year, I made 50k, I had all the holidays off, my kids and my wifes birthday, our anniversay, halloween to take the kids trick or treating, and new years eve (first time in 10 years). I also average MOST weekends off, not all, but after I got off reserve, I had the weekends off and was able to make it back to church on Sunday morning. Tell me any other airline, even mainline, that this would be possible as a 1st year FO.

Hello, a few questions that I haven't seen in the forums.
For the purpose of flying my butt off and quick line holding, I'm thinking of basing at CVG (to live in KY) but would like to pick up flights out of DAY that need filling. Is that an option?
Also, I think I understand from all the reading I've done, but when you volunteer to fly on a day off, you're pays at the 125% rate, correct? And there's a chance that the amount can be higher depending on the window (24/12/6 hours out) correct?
