So your first sentence is correct - we ALL got raises not too long ago,... except for half of us.
I can only conclude that AA does not wish to "retain" us after December 1, 2017, which is when the last of the Captain retention bonus installment is supposed to be paid.

There were people that upgraded out of seniority order last year (DECs). It seems that none of them went to DCA. So, everyone that is upgrading now is getting DCA/DAY/CVG for a month or two and will then move to CLT or TYS if they want to.
It is just how the bid openings and the availability are playing out right now.
The last 5 captain vacancy bids all had an effective date of July 1st (meaning that anyone that wants to transfer bases will do so on July 1st for those bids). There will be major movement for captains between bases on July 1st.
For instance, there are already more than 20 captains that will move from other bases to CLT on July 1st.
DCA is also a growing base. There were only 20 lines this month, and 22 lines next month. It is expected to grow to far more than 50 lines (last number I heard from an official source said to 80 lines). DCA has more pilots on reserve right now, but will also be getting all of the additional 700s that are coming in. Some might say that DCA is being "overstaffed" to be ready for additional growth.

It was a *ONE TIME* $7500 "retention bonus" for Captains, divided into 3 installments. Anyone who upgraded after the bonus was agreed to does not get the bonus nor do they get their $10,000 F.O. bonus.

Most everyone else that upgraded received at least 1 or 2 of the FO retention bonuses, plus got the increased pay before they upgraded.
Yes, the Captain retention bonus is currently a one time bonus. We don't know what they will offer next.
But, as a whole...
Pay has increased. There is a lot of movement with lots of upgrades. We received the commuter hotels. We received profit sharing. We received 2 free tickets (guaranteed seat) that AA flies.

Look at CLT FO
The most junior Round 1 "line holder" (R1) was hired on 6 June 2016, and he has been on property for 0.84/years. So, from new hire to being able to hold a schedule and to use the Schedule Adjustment Period (SAP), right now you have to be on property about 10 months.
Just a few months ago, this number was well over a year. The time that it takes to hold a R1 (round 1) line and be a line holder has decreased. These are published monthly, so you can see the trends and how senior or junior each base and seat is. Right now, our attrition and growth is helping a lot, and time spent on reserve is decreasing.
BU are build up lines. It is a schedule that may be all scheduled flying, or might have a few reserve days mixed in.
LCR is long call reserve. 12 hour call out
SCR is short call reserve. 2 hour call out.
Since you are in training about 3 months, you can see that for FOs in DAY and DCA, you can hold a line within a month of being hired. For CVG, it is about 2 months.
For Captains, DAY is the junior base, and TYS is the most senior.
