This would be a major violation of our contract. The union oversees the lines and audits them. If additional lines could be built, then the union volunteers would make sure that they are built and put in R1. If you have any information that leads you to think that this isn't happening, please contact the MEC immediately.
I can't believe that it is really happening.
What I have seen happen recently is that people are resigning (or going out on leave of some sort) after they have a R1 award. Their trips get dumped into either R2 or open time. When 3-5 people do this, with 4-5 trips each, it creates a large amount of open time that is often used to build additional build up lines.

I know a few people who live in CLT and are bidding to CVG so they can hold a first round line. They upgraded about a year or so ago.

The CLT times for FO's have not been holding steady compared to the other domiciles. In CLT, the time to hold Round 1 has increased each month, and this month the time to hold Round 2 has increased. This trend has been going on for the last few months despite the overall number of pilots increasing. It appears the number of lines have been decreasing at the same time.
In all the other domicilies, the time for FO's to hold Round 1 have been steady and have decreased. If you are new to the company, or still in training, it's probably best not to bid Charlotte if you want to get off reserve.

Well, I’d be happy if I were you folks as FOs; even in CLT. Took some of us a long time to hold a RD 1 line. Then you have the lost decade folks having been on reserve for 7 years or more. Just sit back and hold on for the ride.

Not sure what causes there to be enough left over time to build extra lines after getting LCR. Glad for it though, as the $250 would not go very far if I had LCR for the whole month. It could be extra time due to attrition. However, in August I was a few away from Round 1, then slipped to a solid Round 2, then down to LCR. And this is not my first Part 121 job, and spent many years on reserve in the past, so not complaining, just looking for reasons. Since CLT has gained many FO's at the bottom of the seniority list, the only explanation is fewer Round 1 and Round 2 lines. This is especially true in November as the number of Round 2 lines was about half of what it was in October. Also, the LCR I was awarded had me off for Thanksgiving, but the new build up line I am working.

1. Getting more frames from Envoy
2. End of contract with Air Wisconsin
CLT lines reduction is just temporary IMO.

With Christmas, we will see what people do. December will be a very busy month for us, but if all of the R1 guys fly their awarded line without SAPing down to 65-70 hours, there will be fewer trips available for R2. My guess is that Christmas is a bigger holiday and fewer people will want to work it, meaning more R2 lines than in November.
As for checking the "additional build up lines", you are at the mercy of scheduling. Sometimes it is great, other times it is painful. The beauty of LCR is that you rarely don't fly. You are used first and I have been notified of flying more than 24 hours in advance.
On the Captain side, we are WAY overstaffed in CLT when people fly more than 65 hours a month.

The total block time is more in November than it was in October. There are fewer R2 lines in CLT simply because a large number of people didn't SAP down so they could get the 200% for the holiday. With the majority of my friends that usually SAP down to just 3 or 4 trips, they felt it was better to just keep their schedules and make 120 hours this month. Thanksgiving is not an important holiday to them.
