Anybody else receive a phone call from the chief pilots today?
I was called and asked why I haven't upgraded yet. Before anyone bashes the chief pilots....I was not pressured at all or even asked to upgrade. It sounded like the company wanted them to take a survey for reasons why we're bypassing. I get the impression the company is starting to feel the pinch.

I received a call as well. I answered and we had a nice conversation about it. Basically I told them that reserve at PSA is a special kind of bad and that the pay wasn't enough in and of itself to go back on reserve and lose all my days off. They agreed and said that they were just curious so that they could pass the message along. We talked about some other interesting things going on at PSA right now but I won't post any of that here.

He laughed at the second bit. Pretty sure I heard him writing down my name though 😉

This time around it seems like the chief pilots already understand why nobody wants to sit reserve as a captain and make the same amount of money with less days off. When they called me earlier, I got the impression they were only taking a survey because the company wanted them too. Plus, this time around the market for DECs isn't nearly as attractive as it was 2 years ago.

I remember this happening. I think the difference was that a lot of people with previous 121 time back then were pressured into upgrading. There were several endeavor guys in my new hire class that said the chief pilots told them they were going to put them in the next upgrade class without really even asking them.

The constant abuse from scheduling and lack of common sense is ridiculous. 8 hours of airport standby on the first day (at least) of every block. Hanging out in the Dayton airport until 9pm when the last flight left at 3pm.
I left PSA after a year to come to GoJet as a DEC and it has been a great decision. Only 2 reserve blocks can be converted to short call, the rest is long call. I still haven't been assigned airport standby, and most importantly I will hold a line in a commutable base before the other DECs in my PSA class will.
PSA probably wouldn't be hurting for captains so bad right now, if they had made it a less horrible existence.

Not gonna lie, reserve is reserve. If you're a commuter, god help you. If you live in base, not that big of a deal. I've done both.
But if you were a DEC you knew full well that reserve was going to be your long term future.
And there's a reason that your seniority at GoJets rises a lot faster than at PSA.

I was a 2015 DEC at PSA. Reserve at PSA is the worst $&i@ I've experienced in my aviation career, that includes living 6 to a room in a trailer in the desert.
