Squamous cell carcinoma - just diagnosed
OK folks, spent the majority of my adult life, since age 17 anyway, on airport ramps, as a line-boy, PPL, CFI, or other pilot job. Most of that time (but, no, not all of it) I have used sunblock.
In any event, a few months ago I had a strange same-skin-tone-color mole (not a black or brown mole...) on my forehead, very small. I thought of it more a cosmetic nuisance than anything else, so went to the dermatologist. They removed it and advised the lab report states it is Squamous cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer.
I do not know if this is from being up at altitude with the sun coming into the cockpit, or being on the ramp, but even with sunblock (most of the time), I got this.
Heads up for everyone. Fly safe (and healthy)....

Most adult skin cancer is due to childhood sun burns. Scar tissue is particularly prone to squamous cell. But adult exposure doesn't help either. Golfing, boating, flying ... all increase risk. I cover up the skin-cancer windows on the 717 with the most opaque substance I can find every leg. Thinking of cutting out a car sunshade and bringing it to work.
