The Tabata interval works well for me. Usually do one using the exercise bike or fat ropes after lifting. Otherwise may do 2 or 3 on the bike on non lifting days.

This is evident if you've seen the numerous physiques that finish a marathon. There's a lot of high body fat percentage folks making it 26.2 and after 6 months of training no change in physique. Contrast that with sprinters.

I train at an old school body building gym in TX - the kind with duct tape on all the benches, grunting is allowed, chalk everywhere, and grey sweatpants are still in fashion - everyone in there (except me of course) is rock solid ripped. Not a cardio machine, period. If you want cardio they have a boat anchor and some chains you can pull through the parking lot...

You can't get into that without a qualifier.

Default Gut

I'm 6'1" and 49 years old and in my current job was packing on the pounds, reaching an all-time high of 237 lb in March of 2011. I got disgusted enough with my appearance and lack of strength and endurance, that I and my wife bought Insanity. We chose it because it requires no weights or other equipment (So I could use it consistently while travelling) and promised results. Well it delivered. Without changing my diet (in fact I ate like a pig), I lost 17 pounds in 9 months. I still had more fat to lose so I did the math and started counting calories, and lost about another 17 pounds over the next few months. About that time, just for variety and due to an interest in martial arts, I switched to Les Mills Combat. Now I'm fitter and stronger than I was in my 30's (I'm 49 now), and fitter and stronger than most men at any age. Many people who haven't seen me in a while, and most people I work with, have commented on my weight loss and fitness. I'm wearing my skinny pants again.

That first month of Insanity was HARD. I was much more out of shape than I realized and I forgot what is was like to not be sore. I even considered quitting, but I stuck with it, and it's hard to express how glad I am that I kept to the program. My wife was a great help in this, because I was not about to let her leave me in the dust.

I did all this while still travelling regularly (As I still do). I committed to following a workout schedule, regardless whether I was travelling or at home, and counting EVERYTHING I ate or drank. That meant greatly reducing the number of brews I drank with with crew on the road, among other things.

The only way you're going to get the results you want is to commit to some positive changes.

Not looking to get a 6-pack, just want it to be flat so I can see my feet without having to suck it in. This is my typical routine: I have 4-5 day trips, early shows with late finishes, and even though I pack snacks and some meals for these trips, I usually end up eating after 10pm when I'm finally done and most times skip meals and eat bigger meals. A lot of 14-15 hour duty days, so not much opportunity for exercise during the trip..... "I've been sweating for the last 12 hours, want to take a shower and put on dry clothes before I have to wake up in 7 hours"

I try to run a few miles a day when I'm on days off, and prefer to walk than drive the car. Even joined a gym, no results after 2 months of going frequently. I used to be involved heavily in athletics, was very fit and lean especially from growing up on a ranch. Just frustrated with no results.
If you want to lose the gut then one way to do it is keto.

Read "wheat belly", "The Paleo solution" and "fit for life, not fat for life" everything you need to know about why we are fat and how the agricultural revolution is to blame
