It's simple,

Get good look at 20/20 line before covering eye with giant black plastic spoon. Memorize 20/20 line. Cover 20/20 eye, read 20/20 line

Cover less than 20/20 eye, read 20/20 line.

Problem solved.

I have a 1st class medical with a waiver for the left eye not being correctable to 20/20. My right eye is 20/20 correctable and with both eyes I can read the 20/20 chart. To get the waiver, I had to get a special eye evaluation by an eye doc and also had to do a medical flight test with the feds. My understanding is that at least 1 eye has to be correctable to 20/20 to even be considered for a waiver..

Wait the AME's are suppose to check vision? Haha

At my AME, you spend longer filling out the paperwork than you do the exam.

He just asks are you still about XXX lbs? Can you hear me ok? Have you been to the eye doctor lately and still wearing contacts?

Then the real exam starts, looks into your ears, listens to your chest and takes your blood pressure.

$90 later and here is your new medical!

I love this guy!

The hearing test is difficult, wait until you hear the knob crank to the right. EDFCZ.

Just diagnosed with an eye condition call CSR (Central Serous Retinopathy) after i failed my left eye exam on my 1st class. My condition is stable per my eye specialist.

Petras52 or any other pilot on this board, could you tell me how long it took to get your SODA and if you worked with any medical service to assist you with the FAA?

I am in contact with ALPA aeromedical and thier vendor: Aviation Medicine Advisory Service out of Colorado.

Prescription pilot sunglasses don't have to be expensive. Try those by Mile High (Rapid Eyewear) - dedicated pilot prescription sunnies with interchangeables and single-vision prescription lenses added for under £100.00 ($130.00).
