Color Vision Deficiency / 1st Class Medical
Well I passed my 1st class medical last night, with no restrictions... They had a Titmus tester, I wasn't able to see the numbers in the plates, but the other page has a series of E's pointing either Up, Down, Left, or Right... I was able to pass that section. The FAA manual doesn't go into detail as to which part of the titmus color vision tester is acceptable and which is not... But I passed the E's. I passed the FALANT before, and that’s when the FAA screwed us and changed the rules making you have to do it every time. Took me more than a year to find that FALANT... And it cost like 100 bux to take... Long story short I am able to pass some tests, and others I cannot...
My question is... Right now I have an unrestricted cert. I don't want to go into this worrying about which tests I can pass and which ones I can't... If I take the MFT even though I have no restrictions, and fail it for whatever reason, does that still give me a restriction even tho I don't have one right now?

DO NOT TAKE THE MEDICAL FLIGHT TEST UNLESS YOU HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE...IF YOU FAIL THAT YOU ARE MARKED FOR LIFE!!! YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO FLY AT NIGHT AGAIN!

Read the above link 10 times over and make sure you understand it completely. You are not alone...many pilots have a slight "deficiency" its perfectly normail. Search old threads on www.airlinepilotcentral.com and www.jetcareers.com for color vision threads. Life is far from over but you need to not make any mistakes in your medical process.

My main concern with avoiding the FAA is this... Say for example I finally get onboard with a regional (after 50+ grand of loans for schooling...) Then a year passes since my first class medical... Time to get renewed. My Doctor is pretty lenient on color vision... He gives you different options if you can't pass... He himself is an actual dicromat, and knows the difference between someone who can clearly tell red from green and someone who definitely cannot... Basically he has an ishihara series, and 2 different titmus options... I passed the 3rd option he gave me, but not the first 2... But what if he retires? Or something changes? Am I going to have time to go around scheduling tests with different optometrists or AME's all of the time with a varying airline schedule? What if it expires before I'm able to get the extra paperwork thru? Does anyone else go thru this, or have any advice? It's such b.s. that they don't give LOE's anymore for the FALANT, or other passed methods...
