Commuting at Piedmont is not recommended. MDT is a small base, you can always commute to PHL and drive to MDT or take the train if you get it. You should be able to be PHL based right away or within the first two bid cycles.

What have you experienced that has formed your opinion that commuting is not recommended.
I have a 20 something family member thinking about applying.

4 to 5 days on, 2 days off. That's no way to live when you're a commuter.

Actually commuting… really sucks with 2 days off in between trips/reserve periods with min days off. Live in base and the bad QOL schedules will be more bearable with $.

got that t shirt. I commute. Biggest tip. Don’t commute to both jobs. Pick one to live next to. Commute is doable here but it depends on airport availability. Pro tip. Go check out aa.com and find out how many non-stops there are between CLT and PHL from your airport or one within an hours drive. You want at least 3 a day. Also, check out the flights back to your airport. If the last one is leaving PHL or CLT before 4 everyday…don’t do it. Two leg on go home day is not ideal.

Thanks, yes I would be commuting to PDT. Which would allow me to drop mil leave as needed. Are they are fairly mil friendly company?

Default How Bad is it?

I'm currently a CFI with 400 hours (1000 hour R-ATP). I'm looking at the Piedmont Cadet program, it offers a $30,000 bonus, which is significant to me as it is more money than I will make this year from my flight instructing job, and money is just really tight right now. I was wondering for the current Piedmont pilots how bad it really is at Piedmont? I hear a lot of stuff about you guys being overworked, underpaid, with inefficient trips which doesn't sound like a lot of fun. Also how's the management? Support you? Throw you under the bus at the first opportunity? I'm not really concerned about the new pay rates as those are going to expire probably right after I get there, but the company culture is really what I'm looking for. I'm also looking for a quick upgrade and a lot of time building as soon as possible. I'm currently in the guard, but as soon as I get out my wife and I want to move overseas (yes I know that is not good for my career and I can make more money here, we've both always wanted to move overseas so I need to build turbine PIC time to get hired over there). I appreciate the help in advance, I know it'll be hardworking but I just want to know if its really as bad as the horror stories I've heard, or if its reasonable, thanks.

Piedmont is not a BAD place to work. This would imply my peers and I, who have worked here for years, are either too dumb or incompetent to move on. Regional Airlines are typically not career destinations. Sure, the schedule at PDT is ROUGH. You will work, a lot. Commuting makes this worse. Your interactions with management should be very limited. PDT is a good place to go for a reason (I.e. accrue flight time quickly, minimal reserve, close base), it’s a good stepping stone. If you look at it like that, it’s actually a good place to work. Company culture doesn’t really mean anything, cute Twitter posts and special pins don’t pay your bills.
