Piedmont Airlines News & Rumors

Because the company explicitly said they intend to keep hiring. No one is saying they believe that the situation can't or won't change. That's just the current information.

Hah! That’s so last week’s airline industry but for all of our sakes, I hope that you’re right. With our competitors variously parking 300 jets or cutting capacity by 50%, I’m starting to feel like us airline pilots have a lot in common with Bear Sterns employees in February of 2008. This is some historical stuff that we’re in the middle of right now and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if AAG doesn’t see a government bailout or bankruptcy before it’s all said and done. Like I said, I hope to goodness that you’re right and that I get to eat my words rather than vice verse.

Truth is, nobody knows. This is an unforeseen and a way unexpected thing that nobody ever thought could or would happen. AA is parking the 767s sooner than planned and then on to the 757s and probably the190s soon after as well. The good news (if it is good?) is the 737 MAXs are still out of service. However, when this whole thing is all said and done I foresee AA coming out a bit leaner. Fewer total planes and in turn less pilots needed overall. The Worst case for all of us is AA might actually get closer to balanced in terms of pilots on property vs those needed by the number of aircraft with all the retirements they have coming in the years to come. It could be possible that flow may be the only way to get to AA in the future...
As for the regional world? Well maybe 50 seaters are a good thing since we can't even fill them up right now. No need for a 175 if you can't get 50 people on a plane right now.
Overall, there is no playbook for this whole situation. Just buckle your seatbelts and remain seated for the entire ride.

If only it were that easy, even the backup plans are taking a hit with this crisis. We are in unknown territory and it will be a long road for many professions, not just aviation. At least with 9/11, the vast majority of our workforce still had jobs to go to.

Exactly. Uncertain times ahead everywhere for everyone in the industry.
Look at TSA, the first victim. We knew their time was ending, but they got a bullet to the head today. Compass is not looking too hot these days either, and then there was that 175 back to 145 shake up at Xjet. The Majors will probably get a bail out, but a lot of fat will be cut at the top which means vast uncertainly everywhere at the bottom regional levels.
