One thing to keep in mind is that many times, examiners can tell if a person is grossly lying about their experience just by talking with them, or climbing into an airplane in them. When the skill level doesn't match up with the time they claim they have, that raises a red flag. Furthermore, as mentioned, it's a small world in aviation, and they just might know the airplane/owner of the airplane the person is claiming to have built time in. A few questions regarding the quirks of that airplane may reveal a falsified records.

I've always kept a copy of all the invoices from the places where I've received instruction or rented airplanes . . . it's good supporting evidence to have just in case someone questions the hours stated on your logbook.
