Thanks, Flydog! You just made my mind up for me! That is unless you can otherwise convince me that this would be a useful endeavor in addition to instructing Monday through Friday and dragging rags on the weekends. Is $2,000 unreasonable for the qualification? What if that training also includes an initial tail wheel endorsement? Does it usually reduce the training cost to show up with a TW endorsement and a few hours? Is there anyone else who conducts the training any cheaper?

$2,000 seems like a lot of money for banner tow training. Towing banners does not require a specific endorsement and the training shouldn't take a lot of flight time. Mine consisted of a couple of hours of ground school followed by 3-4 flights lasting around 30 minutes each.
If it includes the tailwheel endorsement, then it's not so bad. I used to teach tailwheel and it takes people 5-10 hours to be proficient enough for a sign off.
I think banner towing is some of the most challenging and rewarding flying you can do, so if you have the opportunity to do it I would jump on it.

If you're willing to relocate just keep looking around. There are companies out there that don't ask you to pay up front, but they do want you to at least have a decent amount of tail wheel time. If you don't have some TW time then it will be kind of tough.
