Why would the company waive seat locks? Has that ever happened before?
There are folks floundering in low FDP fleets trapped by their seat lock...

If there are not enough non-seatlocked pilots bidding a position, then the company is waiving seatlocks for anyone who bids said position. In today's case, that means otherwise-seatlocked pilots were awarded the 650.

Does the seat lock evaporate or is it added to their new seat lock ?

They will incur a 39-month seat lock in the -650, but do not have to carry any over from their new-hire assigned aircraft. Additionally, it does not prevent them from upgrading on any fleet within 39 months, if given the opportunity.

I think it's ok to let them sidestep the seat lock but not to erase their previous seat lock.
I'm guessing I'm in the minority on that?

Furthermore, if you do incur the new seat lock in a new fleet and get an upgrade bid awarded to you before that expires, it will carry with you into your new PIC seat lock on the Phenom/XLS. So a lot of people seeing the upgrade time shrinking have pulled their FO large cabin bid out to avoid carrying that additional 39 month lock on top of the captain one when that time comes.

If you were to upgrade within your new 39 month seat lock (which at the current pace is very likely,) you would carry the remainder of the seat lock.
Example, someone moves to the 650, 19 months later they upgrade in the Phenom, now they have the new 39 month lock for the Phenom, plus the 20 months outstanding from the 650. 59 months total in this example.
Be careful what you wish for.

It would be a great opportunity if upgrade times weren't coming down so quickly.

I don’t know if it’s the negative or just the truth. I was talking with some of the group that I got hired with 4 years ago and they were unaware of this. I think they are looking at their decision to switch from their initial hire fleet to GLC differently now. If the company stops upgrades and they were waiting for a better fleet to not carry a long seat lock onto they could miss out on the upgrade. I’m already on a fleet that not a lot of people want to go to. I can upgrade on it and not add a seat lock and move to a better fleet once it becomes available. Or the upgrades could stop and they are living the good life as a GLC sic and I am stuck in the nom. You never know.
