I don't think NJA is a career as an FO, just like I don't think regionals are a career. Not to further burst your bubble but with the rumored staffing changes, NJA might suddenly find themselves a couple hundred pilots fat, and that would push off hiring for a couple of years without expanding the fleet.

That was the last time we ate together that week. I was mortified.

Careful what you wish for. I don't even think my NJA new hire class in 2015 has 200 pilots below them. Rumor is the new TA is going to further reduce staffing exactly like I predicted they wanted to. So upgrades will go way and hiring will be minimal at best. Hopefully, the airlines recover so more people leave NJA, and that opens up a spot for you, since that's where you want to be.

Reducing staffing levels while handling the same amount or more work is the holy grail of the bean counters. It is unlikely that fleets not in disposal get to the new level and it is unlikely that these reduced levels will allow for adequate service. One of the big plusses of the '18 contract was the ability of the company to have much better scheduling stability when pilots cared once again about flying. If they squeeze too much, the fatigue calls and apathy towards helping will go up, scheduling stability will go down, time off for overnights will go down and it will become a vicious circle causing more of all the bad things to continue. I'm not saying they won't push the envelope to see how far they can cut before the wheels start creaking, but it is unlikely to get to the new bottoms until big hiring is needed, just as they were never really able to get to the old bottoms either. It will slow down hiring while they test the new schedule and pilot buy in, but they want to grow the fleet in big numbers and pilots will eventually retire. My guess is that it gets ugliest once they need to hire again in larger numbers against the airlines when they are hiring. That will be a serious strain and test on the bottom crewing ratio.

As previously said to you, by me, several times, you need to expand your horizons. You are not limited to only going to NJA, or only being a regional FO. Are you going to skip over some great potential jobs by waiting for NJA who may or may not call?

I could stay at my regional, maybe upgrade and if I did I would apply for check airman as soon as I could. There’s also teaching positions at my company that could supplement pay and I don’t have to be a captain for that. If I could make over 120K where I am now, I would be quite content. They’ve been very good to me and all the crews I have flown with have been great.
Mainline is something I’m just not interested in now that I’ve seen what happens in a financial crisis. Granted the poop can hit the fan anywhere, but I would sooner stay at my regional with seniority than lose all my seniority, go to mainline and the next economic grenade goes off and I’m on the street.
Those are the only options I’m aware that I have.

From where I sit, I could go to Atlas. Their schedule and pay would not work for me. It’s way too much time away from home and that’s important to me. The other option is FlexJet. If NetJets has truly dried up as an option, that’s probably where I would try to go. Their benefits and stability don’t seem nearly as good as NetJets and the pilot group seems especially cranky.

Remember when you had the world by the coat tails and were going to upgraded really quick.... that changed the other way fast. It will change again fast. Just be patient.
