It greatly depends on where you live. If your base has only one or two airlines serving it, its pretty easy to build status. If you live in a huge metro area where you can be put on anyone, then no its not easy.
In the CA Bay Area, I was OAK based but I could be flown out of OAK, SFO, SJC so I could literally be flown on anyone, and the same goes for coming home.
You do have the ability to dummy ticket and book your own ticket on the airline of your choice so you can build status, but you only get reimbursed 80% of the original ticket price, and NJA pays absolutely stupid low ticket prices so if building status is worth potentially several hundred or thousand dollars, you have the ability to do it.
Most pilots are able to build status on one airline, I got A list on SWA but everyone else I had nothing.

It depends on how much you want to work. I hold lines working 12 days a month but work 15-18. For me working 15-18 at SWA is a lot easier than working the 77 at NJA. Especially when I'm able to pick up some 19 hr overnights at home. I'll do around 150 year two and 190 year three plus about another 25% in retirement and profit sharing. Your hourly rate will be higher because the pay scale increases every year of the contract. CA pay is double what I'll do second year.

Uh, no.
I actually just got the United credit card so that I won't have to board in Zone 38 with them. 0$ this year and then $95 per year thereafter. Maybe I can write it off as an unreimbursed business expense. Hmmmmm.....

That does it then. I'm going to Southwest. They're just like the regionals right now. Begging for pilots. I'm amazed they're not offering sign on bonuses. Equally amazed why they haven't called me or thousands of other qualified people who have their apps in with them right now. Why did you go to Virgin Jetlife? Southwest is way better!

I would have loved to be OAK based for SWA.
